Hey Mud,
I put my sensor in the oil return line going back to the pan, the rubber one in the cavity between the engine and transmission. Put a "T" fitting in there for the sender and put on new, shorter hose (old one hard as a rock). Best spot to get real engine oil return temp reading. Real tight working in there, but it fit. Cut a small notch in the bottom of the cast aluminum cover to run the wire out and called it done. Gauge (along with oil pressure) mounted on bars. Ran new wire from new inline fuse up from fuse block for the power.
Put the gauges in carbon fiber cups (cost more than the gauges did). So far, so good.
Well, wired the gauge last night, pulled console up and found ignition powered wire to splice into ( thanks MUD) ran wire down clutch cable to oil pan. works great.
I just bought the new oil cap with oil level and temp gauge built in. A little spendy at $139, but I had store credit to eat up so... I like it, but you cannot really check it out while riding. Sometimes at a stoplight I will reach down and push the button and check the temp...seems to be running at 259 when fully warmed up in 95 degree heat, which I think is OK since I run synthetic. I also have the Xied's on it which is supposed to keep it cooler.
