i have a 98 fxdl. also have an 03 ultra. my son was riding behind me this weekend on the lowrider. i would turn my signal on and he would at the same point. mine stayed on through the turn, but his consistently went off prior to the turn from the same location. looks like his just doesnt stay on the same amount of time before it automatically turns off. silly question i know, but it is anoying and i couldnt find anything in the search about this.
It's possible he may have been leaning a bit more than you thus tripping the lean bank sensor to turn off the turn signals via the TSSM.
Naw i doubt it. I have to really turn for my signal to go off,leaning wouldn't do it.
Uh surley your son's bike isn't the same year as yours? I doubt there is any adjustment. My '08 stays on.... I've never counted but at least 15 or 20 seconds.sitting still they don't turn off. Maybe he has a faulty module,do they last the same time on both directions?
Having recently come from a road king & always riding around with guys on Street Glides, I can say the touring bikes turn signals do seem to stay on longer. Sometimes, not even turning off at all. This weekend I rode around with a couple guys on a heritage softail & a fatboy - and, like my street bob, our signals always went off quickly; I never had to say "Hey - your blinker is on" like I had to always do to my street glide buddies.
I'm sure it has to do with the difference in frame and the whole setup of the bike. The dyna's, you can lean & toss around much faster & quicker than a bagger - just by design, which triggers whatever the sensing mechanism is much easier.
My manual says that the computer calculates changes in RPM's and speed to cancel the blinker.
If someone were used to riding an older bike without cancelling blinkers, it's possible that they are cancelling them manually, just out of habit.
My 1999 Superglide will not cancel unless it is over about 75-80 degrees out side. Go figure. My manual talks about RPMs changes to cancel them.
I've posted my problem here without any suggestions. By now I have learned just to manually cancel them. Unless it is warm, in which case I look like an idiot turning them back on.
Anyway maybe you hit your RPMs differently. I doubt they would be adjustable.
You should try riding the lowrider this time, and your son on the other bike. Take the same type of corners and see if the same thing happens.
It may just be your riding styles, but that's one way to find out.
problem is, they cancel before he ever takes a turn. picture going down the road straght nthen putting on blinkers, then they go off too rapidly. he is hitting them at the right time. they just dont stay on. i will check rpm advice and maybe see what a new modulator would cost. if its not too much may be worth the try.
I don't know about your year model so this may not be any help, but....
The signals canceling does not work off an angle sensor on the newer models. They work off a magnetic speedo sensor mounted in the top of the transmission. This sensor picks up the passing of the teeth on a particular tranny gear and sends this signal to the speedo and the signal module for the canceling function. Typically problems with the speed sensors will cause erratic speed readings and improperly canceling signals. Many of these problems can be fixed by removing the sensor and cleaning it. Replacing it is sometimes required.
they read the bank angle sensor, which lets the computer know how far over you've leaned and to cancel it right after you straighten up. other than that, it's in your owners manual about travelling so many feet before it quits, and or time. hey your harleys got a mind of their own. my streetglide, 08, if i bank for an intersection type turn, cancells right after the turn, but doesn't till time/distance has occured with a slight lane change. the bikes are smarter than us.
