Yes, they are smarter. The resulting force on the bike is always pointing straight down, as long as you are riding. So the bank angel sensor will remain straight. Try a pendulum while taking corners...
To capture a turn the TSM/TSSM has in inbuilt accelerometer sensor (like the iPhones). By watching the acceleration it is possible to detect the begin and the end of a turn.
