Anyone else had this happen? I'm making a right turn from a main road onto a side road and there happens to be a CVS Pharmacy on the corner. I hit my right turn signal switch well in advance of the turn and begin my turn. Well, there's an exit from the CVS onto this side road about 100 feet or so from the corner. As I'm completing my turn, the automatic turn signal hasn't quit blinking yet and, you guessed it, there's a car waiting to come out of CVS's side exit. He sees my signal still blinking and assumes I'm turning into CVS so out he comes. Luckily it was all pretty slow speed and I saw the whole thing coming so I was already on the brakes and when he stopped smack in front of me (after figuring out I wasn't turning) and I already knew noone was coming in the opposite lane so I was well clear to swerve around him.
So, my question. Do I need to begin a habit pattern of self-cancelling the signal as I enter the turn so I don't give drivers in front of me the wrong idea about my intentions? What's everyone else been doing?
kj - mine must turn off quicker than yours. I have not had that problem.
I have been in a similar situation and looked down to see that my signal was already turned off -it was, so no problem.
I turn 'em off manually when needed. I always worry about people in driveways being confused about my signal for a turn at the corner. I'll signal later than normal or turn off my signal right at the corner if needed. Just gotta watch out for manually turning them off right at the instant they are going off by themselves automagically. You can end up turning them back on again. But nothing in this world is perfect, ya know?
i made myself start the habbit very early on to always manually cancel the autosignal. just too big a chance of it staying on when really dont want it to.
yes but here is were they mess me up.
i am on a four lane road and i want to go right on the freeway,so i put my right blinker to get off and i am going up the ramp to get on but the ramp is a right bend has i am going up and i put my left turn blinker on to mearge but there is a short strait part to mearge as soon as the bike hits the strait part the blinker gos off just before i get on.
so what i am saying is you cant put it on till just before you get on the freeway or the bike thinks it made the turn all ready.
i gess in your case it didnt think it finished the turn yet is that right,

I've noticed mine stay on several seconds after I've straightened out. Don't know if this is adjustable or not. I'm on an '07 Sportster. Maybe it varies by model as well. As someone else said, nothing's perfect in this world.
How difficult is it to modify the wiring to make them not auto-cancel?
I generally don't like technology that tries to second-guess me.
Not to mention I don't like the HD turn signal selectors in general. I prefer it to be a 3-way toggle on the left handlebar controls.
Forgetting to turn your signals off is something you do when you're first learning to ride and then maybe a couple times a year at most. HD's solution causes more problems than it solves.
Exactly in situations like you describe.

Not sure if I'm ready to go that far - disabling the whole thing. I'm going to try to develop the habit of cancelling them as soon as I begin the turn. That way I still signal my intentions, begin the turn, and then eliminate any possible miscommunication by turning them off before anyone down the road sees them. Opinions?
