I was cruising to work this morning and got pulled over by Illinois finest (State Trooper). I was coming into downtown Chicago on the Kennedy and was pulled over only going 10 mph in traffic.
I didn't know what I did wrong.
He stated that they are cracking down on vertical license plates. He said that bikes have been getting away from them at high speeds and they can't read the vertical plates at high speeds.
He politely showed me the law in the three inch thick manual and proceeded to give me a written warning.
I was just a written warning, but I am thinking of changing to a horizontal axle mounted plate.
Saw a dude at a local bike nite, he had a sticker made that looked just like the real ohio license plate with his number on it... Stuck it on the rear fender... Dont have all that ugly bracketery. He said he hasnt been stop for it.
Florida passed that Law also this year. Guess they think they have to turn their heads sideways to read them. May cause neck injurys. What a bunch of BS.
yeah same deal here in NY, i still have mine but knock on wood i haven't been stopped yet, then the next thing they would hit ya on is loud pipes and then start putting ya through the drunk mill asking ya if you have been drinking.....so so stupid, as american's we only have a few freedoms left and modding a motorcycle in any way as long as it doesn't take the safey away should be all up to us!
I agree... I want to do as much as I can NOT to get stopped for normal stuff. Speeding is enough..... I just found a HORIZONTAL mount that I ordered from EBAY. I printed out the EBAY confirmation and plan on carrying it and my warning ticket with me in case I get stopped before the part comes in and I get it installed.
well... i am going to leave mine... we are always in a group of about 4 - 6 bikes... guess we will see whats up. usually i get pulled over cause they want to check out the bike or find out who did the work... hell the last time they called another squad to check out the chop and my scoot.. who knows may have just been that cop.
if it is an issue i can wip up a few new ones in the shop in no time... just make them horizontal. i have to redo mine now anyways cause i will no longer have a tail light on the fender... may as well just do it horizontal to aviod any BS... getting stopped is one thing... getting stopped after visiting a few bars is another!
Still good here in good ol PA. Dont have to wear a skull cap, vertical plates ok, loud pipes are tolerated, lax gun laws and fireworks are legal. What more can you ask for.
