Default Cylinder Head Temperature

I took an infrared temp reading at the base of the plug after a 30 mile ride to work this morning and got 280 degrees at idle. Does the CHT run higher than oil temp? I've done several searches and have gotten somewhat confusing info. Long story short... is this too hot for a TC96 in summer temps-80+ degrees? Looking into some XiEDs. Running V&H Straight Shot Slip-Ons. Everything else stock. All help greatly appreciated.

Yes it runs hotter and should. Optimum for this engine is 300 head temp. Oil gets cooled as it runs around in cooler areas of the engine so it never hits head temps. Many people feel oil temp indicates engine temp were in effect there are two temps that are needed for the total picture. Head temp and oil temps operate independant of each other and both can raise or lower each other to a certain extent. Hot head will raise oil temp, or oil run through a good cooler can cool the head as an example. Your 280 is just fine, and surprisingly low for stock.

Thanks so much Ron. Sometimes ya just gotta hear it from someone else when you're looking for a problem where there is none! Got almost 20,000 miles on it and I think it was just my imagination that it was running hotter than last summer

Mine run about 250 on the front cylinder and a little higher on the rear.
The highest temp I can find on them are about 3 inches down on the cylinder on the AC side. (I'm Using a Sears Infrared thermometer)

Around here if it was only over 80 we would love it. I have ridden in 115 degrees weather but was too hot. Most people around here put their bikes away for july-sep. Here at work in Needles Ca it rarely drops below 100. I plan on riding early to higher elevations in summer
