Default Stage 1 Upgrade???

Hello All!

I bought my first Harley this spring and can't believe I waited so long! It is a 09 FXDC. I've been lurking on the board since the week I bought it and I'm amazed at the info and knowledge of everyone. Here is my question, I want to do the stage 1 upgrade and contacted my dealer for some prices. It would be $1,200 using some Rush slip-ons SE air system, and re-mapped. Does this seem about right price wise? Also, for those of you that have done it, do you think it was worth it? There are a lot of other Mods that I could make with the $$.

Thanks!

Well, let's see. Stage I SE Breather kit usually sells for about $250. Download is about $100. Rush Slip-Ons go for what $250-350?

At the high end, that's $700 in parts. Is it worth another $500 in labor? At $85/hr for labor they are charging you for almost 6 hours. I could do it in less time in my garage without using my lift.

I suggest you contact Fuelmotousa.com and get one of their power packages which includes a Power Commander tuner as well and comes with a pre-packaged map for the tuner.

Assuming you don't mind turning wrenches yourself. Of course, if you bought an extended warranty and are worried about voiding it, you're pretty much stuck with the dealer's price other than shopping around for another dealer which will charge you less.

Buy a service manual, do the ac and slip ons yourself, take it to the dealer for the ecm flash ($150.00 at my local dealer) and save your self $500.00-$600.00 clams. It's not that difficult and its very satisfying.

Gentlemen - Thanks, even though I'm an accountant by trade, my Dad is a TV repairman and has an excellent set of tools! I think I'm going to give it a go!

It's around what I paid for with the Rush, Stage I, SERT and dyno tune.

Going stage I isn't going to turn your bike into a drag racer, but there are some very real benefits. Your engine will run cooler, sound better, and you should be able to feel improved throttle response and a little more power.

As for $1200 for slip-ons and A/C . . . no way! Talk with Jamie at Fuelmotousa.com. You should be able to do the whole thing for a lot cheaper if you do the work yourself. I personally like the Power Commander for fuel management. There are far superior tuners available, but for simple stage 1 mods, you really don't need the more sophisticated, and expensive, solutions.

Good luck sorting through all the varied opinions your sure to get on this forum and finding a setup you're happy with.

Are you Jeff Spicoli or his brother? Good luck with your Stage 1 upgrade.

Definitely worth doing yourself! Stage 1 a/c $150, download $150, rush slip-ons $280. Your looking at $580 in parts and $620 for labor! It should take you about 1 1/2hrs to do the work yourself. That way you can spend the $620 on chrome! If you have any questions on the install, just ask for help here, we'll walk you through it!
