I have a 2008 fxdc and am ready for my first rear tire change. I do not want another Dunlop. What I want to know is if I go with a Michelin Macadam 50 or a Metzler 880, can I run either of these with my stock Dunlop on front? I've been told not to have different brands of tires on the front and rear... My front Dunlop has lots of tread left and I don't want to change both tires at this time. I have about 7500 miles on the Dunlop and it is squared off and down to the wear bars, I'm not real happy with it. Please give me your input.
IMO you can have two different brands of tires on even if they say "it would be like wearing a tennis shoe on one foot and a flipflop on the other". JMO though!
Just replaced the rear tire on my 08 FXDC last weekend... I only got 7000 miles on mine, down to cord showing in two places.
I installed the new Dunlop D407 multi-compound rear tire... hard in the middle, softer on the outside. 170/70R/17... fits great and handles very nicely. Comes stock on the FXDSE bikes...
The stock tire on the FXDC is the K591 Dunlop... it's a sport bike tire... very soft....originally designed for racing.
Avon Venom's. I have read several posts and the folks were very happy and even said they improved handling. I would just replace them both, save the other as a spare. I don't know if you have replace them both or not. I have always done this with cars.
Did you have the D407 installed at the dealer? May I ask how much you paid, mounted and balanced? Thanks!
I bought the D407, (41998-07) a new tube and rim strip from Latus Harley, local dealer installed on wheel and balanced for 40. So total came to about 220 bucks.
I removed and reinstalled on my bike. It performs very well..... well enough for me to scrap the bottom of my front pipe heat shield going through a corner today....

I too am not to hot on the stock Dunlop. I've got about 8800 on my 08 FXD and do not like how it handles in the rain. It tends to slip and does not give me the confidence in wet weather that I have had with other tire brands. What do you guys think is a good wet weather tire brand? Oh yea all the concern about wet weather is because I live in the Seattle area. I either ride in the rain some days or don't ride.
