Default Installing Baffles Vance and Hines ?

Was trying to find a thread on the best way to put these in. They came in a box today with no instructions. I'm guessing I have to loosen the heat shields one at a time and rotate them a little to access the set screw. My questions are

1.) Is there a set of factory baffles in there I have to take out...looks like just a couple of springs inside or is that the baffle.

2.) Do I leave the tape and wadding attached to the outside of the new baffles ? Will it burn off or degrade eventually ?

I found a previous thread but there wasn't a real answer to the OP's question.

Thanks,

Christian

Yes they come with baffles in them. The hardest part is going to be gaining access to the set screw. Once you do that it's easy, pull the old ones out, slide the new ones in and tighten everything down. And yes you leave the wadding on, it's part of what quiets it down.

The factory baffles look like cheese graters, take them out.

Leave the tape on, it'll be fine.

You will like those quiet baffles and you can feel more torque at low rpms too. Some folks knock the plug at the front out, but I left mine in and they sound fine to me.
Now for my peeve. Those idiots at V&H could have easily made a hole in the chrome covers, so that the set screw would be accessible. I had to mark mine and drill the holes myself and because I wasn't sure if my marking was right on, I drilled a 1/2" holes. Overkill, but not noticable unless you are looking from the opposite side of the bike through the wheel.
You need to leave that tape on the fiberglass for easy installation. I think they should put the quiet (they aren't that quiet when you get up on the pipes @ 3000 + ) baffles in when they are made. Then let people buy the next to nothing baffles as add ons if they need the noise.

Christian i put the quiet baffle in my 2/1 and it was a little too quiet. So last week I took it apart and sheared off what I could. I left a layer but removed maybe 25% of the wadding.the result was lower and louder,no where near stock bub7 loud, but respactable. I'm just saying this because it would have been easier to remove some wadding before use as the stuff shifts with the exhaust pressure. No way to tell without trying though. And don't worry about the tape it just burns off. I replaced mine after stripping some out. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...-madd-vid.html

So.. I was just out trying to get access to the set screw to remove the factory baffle and it looks like I have to take the whole exhaust sytem off again ? I've loosened up the hose clamps and the shields aren't going to slide just that little bit.
Seems like Vance and Hines could have left an access hole to put these things in once you've put the system on. Seems like a big PITA.
Or does anyone have any tips on how they did this without taking the whole exhaust off again.

Heat shields gotta come off to gain access to the screw, at least in my experience they did. Hose clamps are cheap, I ripped them suckers off , removed the shields and replace with new ones on the install

I had no problem accessing the screws to REMOVE my baffles. They are just hose clamps holding the heat shields on...

Thanks... glad you were able to get yours off but with the short shots staggered there's no way to just take off the heat shields. They're contoured and are installed prior to putting on the exhaust. I took off all the hose clamps, tried wiggling the shields just that little bit to move them to get at the set screw and no deal. I figured before I scratch the shields and get all frustrated trying to wiggle them to where they don't want to go.. I'll just redo the whole thing, start over and chalk it up to a crappy design by Vance and Hines for not being able to get at the set screw once the short shot staggered are installed. Hopefully I can save the next guy some frustration in putting these on and then wanting to install the baffles.

If they are two separate pieces, loosen clamps all the way and pull. If they wrap around the pipe at the end it might be a bit more difficult.
