..... I'll just redo the whole thing, start over and chalk it up to a crappy design by Vance and Hines for not being able to get at the set screw once the short shot staggered are installed. Hopefully I can save the next guy some frustration in putting these on and then wanting to install the baffles.

That is the way to do it. Just bite the bullet, take the pipes off, put a hole in the heat shields so you (or the next guy) can access that screw, reinstall.
I have Big Shots Staggared and I was struggling with the heat shields as well. I ended up taking them off altogether and repalcing the hose clamps as they were cheap. I should have drilled a hole while they were off for access later down the road... Wasnt thinking

Thanks for the reply. Same as you, there was no way these things were going to slide just that little bit to get at the set screw. The forward end (at the head) is tucked up into the engine and you just can't tip it out in order for the shields to slide. I wasn't going to muscle it and scratch the powder coating. So, I started over with new clamps and exhaust gaskets. Not going to beat myself up for a crappy design. You live and learn. Glad you were able to get yours installed as well.

Thanks for the reply. I needed to hear that kind of response.
So.. got it all put back together again. Took her for a ride. The sound is definately more acceptable but still with the throaty deep sound I'm looking for. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.
Glad you got it all back together. I have SS Staggered as well. It is possible to remove the shields without taking off the bikes. It is tough and thought I'd damage them at one point but they came off. Going back on was much easier than removing. If I'd of been thinking I'd of drilled the holes too.
Yes, I'm glad you asked this cause I'm fixin' to go get mine from UPS tomorrow and put them in. Now I know what I need to go thru so thanks for the post.
Mine come off fine with the pipes left on no problems at all so it's strange that yours don't? Yes I also drilled holes in the heat shields which makes it easier next time and there will be a next time, the fibreglass packing doesn't last very long so you'll be in there again. I also fitted stainless steel cap head Allen bolts rather than the button head bolts. Trialling a couple of different homemade quiet baffles in the coming week then off to the dyno...
