Default doing a cheap 103 stg 2 build, have ?'s

I was considering a SE Stg 3 but future emission testing here in TX and high octane availability on my road trips up north have scared me off of it.

So I can get a 103 kit w/ the 255 cams from Zanottai for $625 shipped and my dealer will charge me ~$1200 with the standard Stg 2 map for the install.

Is this Timken swap necessary for these cams and if so how much should I expect? I saw the sleeve alone in the SE parts catalog was $120.

Also, they should be able to re-use my pushrods correct? Would paying for the adjustable actually negate some labor and be cheaper?

I need to keep this on the cheap as I am on a permanent vacation from my last employer. I better get back to work soon, I've had too much time on my hands to mod the Bob.

You could probably find a better price for the kit on ebay. Adjustable rods would be good for the future if you're not happy with the 255's and want to swap them out. You won't need to pull the heads off to do so.

Does the $1200 labor charge include dyno tune, which is usually between $250-$300. What fuel management system are you using? If SERT then you're stuck dealing with the dealer. If you have a power commander, you can go anywhere for a tune (within reason of course).

If you have a module that has auto-tune, more power to you.

Also, I think the timken upgrade is more of a choice but it's a time-tested setup that works. Depends how high you want to push that 103 as far as HP/TQ. You can get pretty crazy with it. You should see 100hp/100tq without a problem.

Some say the INA bearings used in the motors are sub-par. I know a lot of people who make those bearings as they have 4 plants in the town I reside.

I just checked the price...from h-d.com. That kit retails for 639.95. Doesn't sound like that great of a deal from Zanotti.

Here is an ebay auction for the kit...$499.

thanks for the replies Longhair.

the kit from Zan's has the cams; the ebay one doesn't
the HD labor includes the reflash with the canned Stg 2 map.
I just can't bring myself to shell out ~1K for an autotune feature or SERT.

Pelliott Long Hair offers some good advice. My advice is ride the $hit out of that nice lookin bike of yours and forget the build. Love Harley's and have done many as you're looking to do however...Harley HP= Plenty of bucks spent...not really known for "on the cheap"
Good luck-

So, you're willing to pay the dealer $150 each time you change somethin about your setup? So you don't have any fuel management now (pc V)?? Not the way I'd go, but hey, you're payin.

255 cams are cheap enough...I've seen them for $50-$100 on ebay. You'd still be cheaper in a long run than buying the "kit" from zanotti's...and you did title this "doing a 103 on the cheap."

A pc V is $300. It would pay for itself in two mods to your motor. (150 to the dealer *2 = $300). I don't know much about the dealer downloads, but if I were trying to do something on the cheap (I am actually...cams) I'd spend a little more to save on the backend and remove as much responsibility from between me and the dealer.

You also won't be doing a dyno tune, If I am correct then. You're just getting a canned setup and whatever it delivers, it delivers.

Just remember... you pay for what you get. If you want a cheap 103" build, and cut corners or leave out parts to get there... that's what you will wind up with.. a cheap 103 build.

The very first part you should consider in doing a CI displacement/cam change, is a tuner. That's where you start.

If I were you I would:
1. save my money, sounds like you're going to need it.
2. ride your bike, because if you do this on the cheap *now*, you may wind up with the bike in pieces....waiting for that next cheap part, and miss riding season.
3. Do you your homework and identify every part you need for the build you want.
4. When you are gainfully employed, start looking in earnest for the best price on the parts you identified in 3.

I'm just sayin, that if you try to cheap this thing, it will never be what you want.

.... and of course this is all just my opinion, nothing more.

I have this exact kit in my Fat Bob and it works great for me. I did the job myself which definitely saves the cash. I am also using the PCIII which I, and as others have said, is something you should have. Doing just the download does change air/fuel ratio but only to the point that it matches EPA approval and you will need a much better setup as said with a fuel manager. I have 95hp and 105tq out of my setup.
