They do inspections already in Missouri. But here in Illinois they do not they used to do trucks and bikes years ago but I cannot see it happening here anytime soon the state politics are way to corrupt here.

I know here in NC when you don't take your car or truck in to be inspected in time (or within about 2 months after sticker date) they send you a notice in the mail to have it inspected or pay a fine. All this is an automated computer system, one of the motivations for which was to combat polluting vehicles in the Raleigh and Charlotte areas. Each vehicle gets the "sniffer" exhaust test to check emissions. Most of the businesses and shops that were doing inspections years ago had to stop because they could not afford the new equipment to keep up with state regulations. My point is that these changes have been made permanent in the last 5 years which is a big difference from the backwards a$$, we're country and who cares, NC that I grew up in. I'm not so comfortable with the thoughts that these changes to motorcycles will never take place or be enforced. Imagine what all the Jews in Poland were saying back in 1937, okay maybe that's a little too far.

Yeah.......but would you want to be in charge of enforcing laws for motorcyclers? That would be the $hit job of the century.........

After the first 18,000 guys said F*&k you............it would get a bit dreary.

In california, even if they did start doing this inspection, i wouldn't have to do anything till 2012, since all new vehicles are smog exempt for the first 6 years.

Any Bike that has been modified. Intake,Engine, and/or Exhaust modifications of bikes Built from 1979 and later, can result in $10,000 in fines per day of operation on public roads. Most states have roadside vehicle checks in the summer. Even tires can affect Emmisions. Your bike was certified to meet EPA specs, in Stock form. Any changes to affect running characteristics could take you out of spec. Most States are short of revenue. So they check to see when you modified your bike. That many days times 10,000 dollars, and they are looking at some serious dollars. Based on how many people that have bragged about the power modifications to their bikes in just the Dyna Forum, Nationwide we could be looking at 1 billion dollars in fines just from our group. They will conficate your bike, on the spot for being nonconforming to State and Federal EPA laws. You could even get some Jail or prison time. If I remember correctly, it would be a fourth or fifth degree felony. Good Luck.

Hey wild bill, so if I took my car to get a kickass exhaust from midas, i will get fined 10K per day. Everyone knows this law exists. I wonder how many people have actually been fined since 1979. I am gonna go out on a limb and say not too many otherwise I dont think there would be so many mods being made by the manufacturer.

Good luck to you and happy modding to your bike. Do you have a bike ????

My Dad bought a bike from harley right off the show floor. It was already done with the mods. It was being marketed on the sho floor. It has the 95ci kit, Basani pipes and se ac. So how did that bike pass the epa standards ????????? Unless Harley itself is lying to the EPA. I think the EPA might go after the big boys like harley before us little guys.

WildBill has a lot of sarcasm in his response with the little good luck at the end. I am thinking some one on his block has done some mods to there bike and he is jealous. Good luck

10 years back while stationed in Las Vegas i had to get the car smog checked each year or two.
They stuck the probe up the tailpipe and of course the car flunked, 5 dollars more to adjust the carb to pass and it passed. Then, another 5 dollars to adjust it back so it would run good again.
What a waist of time and money. Lately in MO they are talking about getting rid of state inspection. Doubt they will, state makes lots of money on their cut of the inspection price.
But if it's getting more strict than why are states talking about getting rid of it or have already gotten rid of it. California excluded, they are always more extreme that most state.
