2007 Dyna Street Bob. Last Friday, started having a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. It doesn't happen all the time. Had 15K service work done today and told the mechanic about the trouble. Of course, it wouldn't act-up while he did the test ride. So iride off and within a mile, can't shift into 3rd. Take the bike back, he test rides again, no problems.
Happened twice on the ride home.
Anyone else have or had a problem like this?? Inquiring minds want to know.
Stab in the dark here, but I'm betting your dealer adjusted your clutch as part of the 15k service? Did you leave the bike overnight before the scheduled service day? If not, the tech may very well have adjusted the clutch while the bike was still warm.
Clutch pack adjustment should only ever be done when the bike is at room temp.
"CAUTION" Perform the clutch adjustment with the motorcyle at room temperature. The clearance at the adjuster screw will increase as the powertrain temperature increases. This is part of the caution in the service manual for my 02. "CAUTION" Do not overfill the primary chaincase with lubricant. Over filling may cause rough clutch engagement, incomplete disengagement, clutch drag and/or difficulty in finding neutral at engine idle. Again from my service manual. Incomplete disengagement could be hampering your shifts.
The hard shift started before the clutch adjustment and no change after the adjustment. The worst part is, I never know when it won't allow me to shift to 3rd. And it isn't a constant thing. Comes and goes, random.
No offense meant but are you shifting corectly? What I mean is, after you shift into 2nd are you letting the peg come all the way down. I had trouble after getting new boots and I found I was holding the lever up after a shift. Take foot out of the way and it works like a dream. I then adjusted the lever a bit higher.
Most times, the answer to a problem is over looked because it is too simple. Yes, my boot was holding up the shift lever. Made the adjustment of the shift lever today. No more problem.

Excellent observation and fix! Adjust your shift lever up a little more to clear them boots!
