Your warrenty doesn't cover problems you cause. If you or someone other than a dealership installs the pipes and you have an exhaust leak then that's not covered by your warrenty. If your starter goes out though that has nothing to do with your exhaust and would be covered.

If you're going with the Power Commander then personally go with the PCV. They made some really nice improvements. They took advantage of the fact they are a piggy back unit to add capabilities to the efi system that just isn't there on the ecm. As far as the pipes a salesman with a mainstream vendor will get you set up with what you need for your bike. FuelMoto is a good place for the Power Commander. I've never heard anything but good stuff about them.

I went with the V&H Big Radius, HD Heavy Breather and HD Stage 1 download. I bought everything through the dealer and had them install. They run a special over the winter to keep their service dept busy that if you have them install, they'll knock 20% off the parts. Worked out pretty good. They also said there would not be any warranty issues (presumably because they installed). I ended up going with the Stage 1 download instead of a tuner because I really don't think i'll be doing any other mods that would affect performance, so i don't need the option for further tweaking. The download is probably a rip off, but it's a lot cheaper than getting a tuner and monkeying with the install. Just my opinion.

For the 1K service, the dealer threw it in for free w/ the purchase of the bike.

You will need a few hours dyno time (one hour for the base map) then 2-3 after you have put 500 miles on the bike for the final tune. Depending on the pipes purchased, I've seen this run anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000. Having said that, I put after market pipes on my Fat Bob when I first got it in Sept 07 along with a Stage I download and high flow air filter and the bike runs just fine. In addition, we have never experienced any motor issues as a result of installing after market pipes before Harley implemented this policy. I will eventually probably be doing a 2 into 1 pipe on my bike along with a SERT and heavy breather but strictly for performance reasons. Not because H-D is requiring me to do so.
Scooter, sounds to me like HD is trying to cinch up the market in aftermarket MODS.

HECK!!!!! Buy what ya want, but we gotta install it and remap it for ya or it voids Warranty.

Ya know, if the warranty was worth the paper it was printed on. hell, i may actually listen to the philosophy and go the HD for everything.

Case in point, ill be brief, not to Hijack the thread. Went to HD for a foot peg issue ( wanted to make it wider ). Realized the Motor Mount was looking a shad bit crapped. Cracked and all.

He said , i can swap it out, 2 hours labor and parts.

" what happened to the warranty? I ask....oh well, you pay us, and HD reimburses. was his reply.

What an A----HOLE!!!!!!

Next day, new Dealership, Item swapped out, 30 minute wait.

Scooter, that is definitely a ploy. The SERT becomes married to THAT bike forever. So, new bike...new $400 sert. I did my own pipes, pcIII and have yet to have any question from my dealer regarding warranty. I also run an open air filter.

The only time they said my warranty would be void is when I do my cams. They said "even if you put SE cams in, it will void the warranty..which sounds ludicrous to me. Harley parts voiding a harley warranty.
