I am a new harley owner and have some questions. I would like to add V&H big radius pipes to my bike. Does this have to be done at a harley shop? I was going to install the power commander and the a heavy breather kit. I have an excellent mechanical background and have worked on several bikes in the past. Never new,fuel injected or a harley? I was told that that had to run it on the dyno and this and that and it would cost close to $2000.00. Will doing these upgrades void the warranty? What about the 1000 mile service? Do I have to have that done by the dealer? Thank you in advance.
I had the dealer install my pipes and SERT but only because I wanted it tuned on the dyno. The power commander would work just fine. You do need something.
Not sure about the warranty. Based on what I have read on here it seems it depends on which dealer you go to or what mood they are in that day.
Do your own 1000K service. Anyone on here will tell you this by the way and besides, the dealer is going to charge you a fortune while showing you this long list of stuff that is required at the 1000K service then when you aren't looking they are going to drain three holes, refill them, spin on a filter and back it out of the shop anyway. I just chose to do my own and keep all my receipts....obviously documentation is key.

you can put all of that on yourself, its very simple, with the pc111- pcv you can get by with a canned map. fyi if you are interested in performance at all those big radius pipes are going to rob power.
I agree with doing your own service. But if the dealer is holding the free coupon for the service since you just bought a new bike your kinda stuck having them do it. Dont know if it was explained to you at the time of purchase. The Dealer told me every thing they add on at the time of delivery carrys a full 2 year warranty. If I take the bike home then the add onns carry a 90day warranty. I would go talk to them before you spend your money on the goodies.
I also like the look of the V&H big radius, but EVERYONE has them and I did't want my bike to look like every other Fat Bob you see on the road.
I went with the big radius 2 into 1 and love them. I had the dealer install them and they guy was so excited to tune the bike, so he could see just how much more performance he could get from those pipes.
Since the dealer installed everything for me, they said my warranty would NOT be effected. I also had the stage 1 a/c and SEST (Screamin Eagle Super Tuner), they no longer make the SERT (Screain Eagle Race Tuner) or so I was told, but almost everyone still calls it a SERT.
According to what we have been told at our shop, Harley requires that any after market pipes be installed along with a SERT (Harley's tuner) in order not to void the factory warranty. If you install anything else, you run the risk of voiding the warranty. You will need a few hours dyno time (one hour for the base map) then 2-3 after you have put 500 miles on the bike for the final tune. Depending on the pipes purchased, I've seen this run anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000. Having said that, I put after market pipes on my Fat Bob when I first got it in Sept 07 along with a Stage I download and high flow air filter and the bike runs just fine. In addition, we have never experienced any motor issues as a result of installing after market pipes before Harley implemented this policy. I will eventually probably be doing a 2 into 1 pipe on my bike along with a SERT and heavy breather but strictly for performance reasons. Not because H-D is requiring me to do so.
oh my freaking god........some of you need to grow a pair.......do you listen to every little thing the dealership says? you do know that they are just trying to sell you chit..... they obviously know you don't know anything and have not put much effort into finding out about some things on your own, sorry for the rant but wow. oh and FYI.....i installed everything and my warrenty is not effected.

This is correct as far as my dealer told me. The dealer that I bought mine through said that pipes, AC, and a fuel module install will NOT affect the warranty. He did say that if I did have a motor issue, I would have to reinstall the factory parts for diagnosis and warranty repairs. It would be a PIA, but that's what you would have to do according to them...
So how do I go about putting the extras on. I am not talking about the nuts and bolts aspect of it. Do I just order a set of pipes, a power commander, and the heavy breather kit and install them. Which power commander do I use? What are some opinions on the best pipes to use. I would like to go with black, so I know I am limiited. Thanks to all of the replies so far. Also wanting to know the best place to buy the parts?
