When I was coming home from work Wednesday evening my speedometer would intermittently drop 10-15mph and my 6th gear light would go out then come back on when the speedo got back up above 60-65. It was dropping from 70-75 down to 55-60. I pulled the speed sensor and cleaned it (it didn't really look too grimey or flake covered) and put some dielectric grease on connector.
I haven't had a chance to test it since I came down with appendicitis Thursday and just got out of the hospital this afternoon. I'm hoping I feel good enough to ride a bit and check it out Monday or Tuesday.

.
check your battery connections.
probably not the speed sensor...... maybe it is... I doubt it.
they cut out my appendix in 1964. I was riding again by Monday or Tuesday.
you'll be fine, just take your time.
Thanks Mud, I checked them as well just in case. They were both tight, but I loosened them and re-tightened them just in case. The sensor and battery connections were my first two items to check without having to get into the wires. I hate wiring issues and I'm trying to avoid it, but ya' never know.
Problems with the voltage regulator usually show up first on the speedometer. If the voltage goes high for more than 5s you'll get a dtc code. So how long did it display an incorrect speed? It's intermittant but is it predictable and repeatable? If it's happening frequently you might try revving the engine while watching a voltage meter to see if you're getting up over 14v-15v. If you know someone with a sert, sest or tts you can use that to log data. They only have to be married to the bike to program the ecm.
I've replaced 2 speed sensors on my 2000 flsts and each time just before they went out my turn signals quit. I thought it was a burned out blub untill the speedo quit. Just a thought.

It's not repeatable or in any pattern. It will just drop and then come right back up sometime a couple of times in a mile, sometimes it didn't do it for 3-4 miles. No other indications, no difference in how the bike runs and everything else seems to be working fine. I didn't think of the voltage regulator though. I'll give it a look in a few days. The wife already scolded me for going out just to "look" at the bike.
She wasn't buying it.

My 07 does the same thing. It drops to 10 or 0, then jumps back. Has been doing it since new. HD idiot techs said "You know they are electrical." Like it is supposed to happen....
It doesn't happen all the time like you describe, but then again, I'm not glued to my speedo.
It seems to have fixed the problem. I started the thread the day after I had appendicitis so I couldn't ride for a few weeks. I've been riding this weekend with no issues. Not sure if it was in the connection or fuzz on the sensor, but the issue is gone.
