Default Oil filter and forward controls?

The service manual says that I may have to disconnect the shift linkage on my forward controls to access/remove my oil filter. I'm going to change the oil on this bike for the first time this weekend and was wondering if this is indeed the case. Anyone change oil with forwards have this issue?

If I do need to disconnect the linkage, I assume I would Locktite blue the bold when reconnecting it? Also, anyone know the torque value for this bolt? The manual only mentions disconnecting, not-reconnecting...

Any other little gotchas about Dyna oil changing, please share. I had no issues with this on the Sporty last year, took 5 minutes. Thanks.

I couldn't figure out a way of removing the oil filter without disconnecting the linkage and not have a mess on my hands. As far as putting the linkage back together I cleaned the thread and reloctite the bolt and tightened by feel. I keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't loosen up. So far so good.

Maybe the shift linkage is different on the FB but I haven't had to remove anything to get the oil filter out.

I have one of those filter wrenches that slips onto the end of the filter and adapts for 1/2" drive extension and ratchet. So, I can put a long extension on it and that gets my hands outside of the linkage. The extension rubs a little bit on shifter arm, but no way is it blocking from either accessing or from removing.

Other than that, get a plastic bottle out of the trash and cut it up to slip in under the filter to catch any oil coming out after you get it loose. You can leave the cap on the bottle if it's big enough to hold all of the oil, not much, or you cn rig up some sort of drain spout out past the shifter and into a pan.

Good luck

I don't take it off, shifting the lever will give you enough room.

You don't have to,, But the time it takes to lossen and remove
the front linkage, saves much in time and mess trying to work around it.
Torque Value? Its just a small bolt and keeper nut...
Tight is the torque value. I promise if you took it to a
Dealer for your service work, They wouldn't put a torque wrench of it....

I did the 1000 mile service on my on St Bob the has forward controls.
I used a small "blue" Craftsman rubber strap wrench. It was 4.99 at Sears.
Loop the strap under the filter, tightly and put the handle on top of the filter, between the front head and the frame. Turn left and it will loosen up. You may have to pull the handle, then re adjust the strap a few times, but it will work.....I have big hands and I was able to do it.....Good luck......Harley must have a oil filter gorilla that puts these things on!

I don't touch the linkage when doing my filter change... I drop the voltage regulator and use a standard automotive (smaller...) oil filter wrench... no problem.

Never thought of doing it that way. Might have to look into that.

I found this info in the engine mount thread:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/5025477-post13.html

The bottom line is not to spill oil on the rubber engine mounting block.

Follow this link and find the pictures: http://www.ernstmfg.com/Images/pdfs/...ctions_web.pdf
