Default shocks and 2 up riding

Hi I have an 06 street bob, over the spring I put progressive 412 shocks 11" and progressive lowering kit in the front forks, I love the look and like the ride, but now the loving wife want to start riding with me, (although she said she would never get on a bike) my question is does anybody have this setup and ride 2 up, is there any problems with bottoming out or any problems with tire or wiring with the added weight, should I change the rear shocks back to the stock ones to prevent any problems
thanks Jeff
by the way I`m about 180lbs she is about 125lbs

I was just about to ask the same question. I put on another brand of 11" shocks and when my wife rides the upper belt guard hits the fender enough to rub the paint off the belt guard. So I was curious if the Progressives would be better.

Well, have you bumped the preload to max? You could also ask Progressive for a heavier spring too. Personal experience, no, just suggestions. Good luck tho!

Bottoming while riding two up is a common subject here on HDF, not just on Dynas. All Harleys have short suspension travel with which to absorb the extra weight of a passenger from above and increased bump input from the road. Using lowered shocks reduces the travel and increases the risk of bottoming out. Unfortunately the favourite person in your life is closer to the bump input than you are, sitting on top of the rear wheel!

There is a list of shock brands here. The wisdom from other HDF members is to talk to your preferred supplier for their advice on replacement shocks. Some if not all of them will build to suit you, which should give you a better ride. I have the same problem with my Glide which I have yet to solve!

Default shocks

1. You need "stroke" to make the shock work. The longer the stroke the larger road irregularities can be transversed depending on the quality of the shock technology before wheel movement is transmitted to frame movement.
2. The distance between shock bolt eyes when the tire has 1/4" of clearance (tire growth) is 9 1/4" (OEM 2008 Dyna Super Glide).
3. The shock must have some type of physical form.
4. 1/3 of the stroke is used for rebound in a good shock (surface dips). 1/3 of the stroke should compress once total sag (bike, rider, passenger, and load) is applied.
5. Limited stroke (short) only has that distance to control the movement (1/3 down ~ 2/3 up).
6. In a real shock; the spring rate is determined by the weight of the bike, rider, passenger, and load. It is always "neutral". The spring only "locates" the axle (bottom mount bolt) in relation to the frame (top mount bolt). A spring should not play any role in shock suspension other than that.
7. The internal components control the movement. A shock should be built to the exact specifications required.
