My super glide surges in lower gears at and about 2100 RPM. Also I have found that at an idle I can remove the rear spark plug wire at it only affects the way the engine runs slightly. If I out the rear plug wire back on and remove the front wire it will die immediately leading me to believe that it is running mostly on the front cylinder. I am thinking this is a carberation issue. Perhaps the rear cylinder is running too rich. Both spark plugs looked a little blackend from a rich mixture but not the worst I have seen. There is no oil on the plugs so I think the rings should be fine but am looking into a compression test. The carb does have a stage II kit. What do you all think?
I have a 2001 FXD and mine would surge some while crusing at 25-30 mph (no tach) at a constant speed. I installed a Yost power tube and it seemed to take care of the surging and throttle response is great now.
As suggested, change your plug wires, and clean your plugs and regap while at it. If that doesn't take care of it, it maybe the carb. Too big of jets if the plugs are looking rich? Does it stumble when you get on it?
If you do a search, there is a thread about how to tell if your carb is setup properly.
The first thing I did was replace the plugs and the plug wires. I put screaming eagle plugs and wires and it did make a difference and was probably needed but it did not fix the problem. The throttle response is friggin radical. I also put screaming eagle II pipes on it just today and it made it idle even better and the surge is lighter but still there. It sounds awesome by the way.
If the SEII pipes calmed it down then you are probably running too rich. Try re setting up the carb or add more air with the SE Stage1 air cleaner which will lean it out some more. But then check your plugs to make sure they are not white and running too lean after each step you do.
