I don't understand...the threads only start in one place on the spark plug and the head...
Are you talking about when to stop tightening? don;t want to over or under tighten...

I had a friend that raced hobby stock. When they did that they would mark the side of the plug were the electrode was and just keep putting different plugs in different cylinders until they found ones that lined up the way they wanted. I agree you can't just stop tightening, or over tighten the plug just to get it to line up the way you want.

They also sell brass washers for indexing sparkplugs. Mark the plug and then add shims so the plug lines up where you want it. Won't work on heads that use a tapered seat to seal the plug surface but Harley's use a flat gasket so brass shims would work if a guy was inclined to pursue this.
I stick with MOCO plugs on my bikes. 6R12 in the Street Glide and SE plugs in the Street Bob SE 120R. The plugs perform well and the cost isn't prohibitive. Have tried several different brands of sparkplugs over the years and have learned the hard way on a couple of occasions that maybe the factory does have a clue when they recommend a specific plug (dodge idle problem that finally went away after I used Champion plugs instead of the other brands I had tried).

Half the time someone asks a question and all we see is "do a search, it's been asked a million times". Now we're not supposed to bring back old posts.
I'll reply to any thread that I think I can contribute to.
