I left my ignition turned on today during my lunch break. Ok, it was more than a break - it was for about 2 hours. Anyway, now I have a dead battery and was forced to drive my cage back to work.
What is the proper procedure for charging the battery back up? I have a battery charger that I use for my vehicles, but I wasn't sure if I could just hook it up as it is or if there is anything special I need to do?
You need a one amp charger, preferably one that monitors the charge. Most car chargers are too big for the small motorcycle battery. If you have just a straight charger, leave it on for at least 12 hours.
I wonder what would happen if you get a boost then ride for a good hour or so and see if it starts up. But you def need a trickle charger sooner or later. 40$ or so.
PS don't feel bad lots of us have done that ,last year I called my local service tek and she just had it changed out for me under warrenty, after I pulled exactly your stunt! I boosted mine with the car (ignition off) and rode it in to save the tow charge! Lucky I guess.
A 19 amp battery with 0 % charge, according to my service manual, charge times (approx.):
3 amp charger=6hours and 40 minutes
6 amp charger=3 hours 20 minutes
I would get the battery up to 12 volts then throw a battery tender plus on it and see what you get, the plus tenders have to see some voltage before they start working.
I'll admit to leaving my ignition on over night. Yeah, stupid. Trickle charger wouldn't charge it. 2 amp car charger wouldn't charge it. 10 amp car charger got it going, but the batter was shot. It would hold a charge for a couple of days, but left me stranded, once. I had to buy a new one. Yeah, stupid.
Don't forget to blue loctite them screws back in the terminals when you are done....I learned that lesson the hard way. Couldn't figure out why my bike wasn't charging back up.....loose ground wire.
