Fork Lock Problem ( 06 streetbob)
Been reading (lurking) on this forum for a while now and have enjoyed the content. Purchased my Streetbob (Denim) last Feb. Came across a problem that other "06" Dyna owners might encounter. I believe all new Dyna's have the fork lock and ignition system located in the head.
Here's what happened, yesterday I went to the garage, unlocked the forks, started the bike and went to the store. When I got home, put Mr. Bob back in the garage, stopped the engine, locked the forks. Wait a second, I should have said, tried to lock the forks. The deadbolt was not lining up with the hole, missed by about 1/4 inch. No Idea at this point why it was mis-aligned, took it to the dealer they will check it out under warrenty.
Was looking at it this evening after work, steering head was tight (no loose bearings) thought I should try some pressure on the dead bolt sleeve to check for movement. Used a screwdriver and gently pried forward on the sleeve, holy moley, it actuall rotated back into position and alined the deadbolt with the hole. Now it locks fine. It moved with only the slightest amount of pressure. Their must be some kind of mechanism that keeps the deadbolt from rotating that failed. Nothing at the key side of the ignition rotated. It still needs to be fixed, it never should have moved. The appointment is two weeks out (29th) will let you know what the actual fix was when done.
Have read some complaints here about some HD Dealers. Got to say mine has been straight up with me. This is my second time with warranty work. First was bad chrome on the heat shields, no issue, they ordered new shields and replaced them upon arrival. Mr. Bob is at 2700 hundred miles, has had no decel noise or popping, surging, or cutting out at all. The plugs are picture perfect and it gets lots of attention. What a package!
Steering Lock #@%^*&* Up... is the thread with more info...[sm=biker2.gif]
"pushing the key in while turning is a not a good thing.."
That would have been my next attempt if I did'nt rotate........glad it did. LOL
Sorry to see I'm not alone. I'm not shy about taking to the dealer, they can't argue about it being a quality defect. As I said my dealer is being good about these thing. Dealer owernership just change hands and the new owner wants good relations. I'm sure they will change the lock set
Can't see hauling a chain and lock around to secure a brand new bike in public. Did that a long time ago though (with an old bike).
2 try: "but that seems like something I shouldn't have to do. "
That was exactly my sentiment, I was happy when it rotated forward, hope yours does the same. I can at least lock it up at home and in public. I had a 86 sportster stolen (using the lock and chain method sited above) from right below the front room window. [
