Default Rear tire gash

Hi everyone I'm new here on my 2nd Dyna 06 Street Bob. Just picked it up at the big dealer 3k miles on it. Park it in the garage and notice a single tread line on the sprocket/left side of the rear tire. I say that's an odd tread pattern just on one side of the tire. I look closer and my eyes widen....it's a gash from the rear fender. The gash cuts down to the steel belts 14" long. Someone missed it in UBI.
I called them up and they picked the bike up and will replace the tire free of charge. To me it looks like the tire was really low on tire pressure. When it was taken for a test ride the fender cut into the tire. I did ride it home and thats what gets me the most. Does anyone think the tire could have seperated or blown out when I was riding it???

I would DEFINATELY do some exploring under the fender, to look for a "too long" bolt.

Wow something is doing some good cutting of the tire. Only thing I can think of in there to do that is the nut assembly for attaching the fender to strut. But whatever it is something is cutting that tire. And yes it could easily cut and cause a blow out of the tire.

Here's another pic of the start of the gash. I looked at the fender and sure enough the paint has been rubbed down to the metal and is warped a little. its a160 rear tire, so with low air pressure it must widen enough to catch the fender.

I have never seen that before! That was a good catch. Would hate for it to go at 75 miles per hour.

Good thing you caught that before you ended up on a 3rd Dyna (after you got out of the hospital).

If that's the case, why not damage to both sides?

I'd make sure there were no other issues involved, just for safety sake.

How is that a good catch? He is probably 1/32" away from dying. That should have been caught much earlier.

Doesn't take a minute to just look over your bike before you ride it. A groove of any sort in a tire would have been easy to spot. I hope the OP learns to do a visual check of his bike much more often, before riding it.

We don't need any one dying on a bike...

Hard to tell but from the OP story but sounds like it happened on the ride home and then was caught. So unless one stops every mile things can/do happen. Like you say visual checks are important but sometimes things happen in route is all.
