Question The dreaded IPB

I am curious. I know the 07 an up have the locating pins for alignment but what about the 05 and older? What was different there besides the six speed? Seems strange that there were no issues on the earlier bikes.

Obviously mine failed and that's what got me wondering about the 05 and older design. I'm going to make the call to HD customer service and see if I can get it fixed but if not I can do it myself.

So......any one know what was different?

I believe and could be wrong IE most likely am. But I have read they used a taper bearing that needed to be properly set then assembled. Stronger yet required more time on assembly line so they changed to the style we have.

Mud posted that Baker has a bearing that is said by Baker to be a replacement option for the 06 up IPB's. Which looks like a great upgrade.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into that set up, if it means I buy it once and don't have to look at it again for even 30,000 miles it would be worth it.

Rick;

I'd sure get HD to fix it; they will if you call Milwaukee Customer Service first and mention the "pink letter" the '06 buyers received (free IPB replacement every 15K miles). First failure, you'll just get a new bearing/race. When/if it fails again, you get the "full monty" with the '07 IP/Tranny cases. Review my "Finally, Good News..." thread from May.
Good luck.

Keep us in the loop; I like staying informed on this issue, and how others are faring when dealing with HD C-S.

Well I need to get up earlier that's for sure. I called at noon and the wait was much longer than I was interested in spending on the phone. I think I'll try again in the morning.

I got ahold of the MoCo and Cathy told me the dealer needs to diagnose it and then call tech support to get the reference number. I then called Owens and talked to Brian. He obviously is un-aware of the issue and could not seem to understand what I was telling him. He was stuck on thinking I wanted them to fix it out of their pocket and told me if I was looking for a goodwill fix my best bet is to go to the selling dealer.

If the Baker bearing will fit and is a better design I will buy it and do it myself. Sometimes when you are dealing with people that won't listen it's just easier to do it yourself and move on. The problem is I will go to the end of the earth and jump off if I have to in order to take care of my customers and when I don't get that kind of service as a customer I just say fug it and walk. Owens is the only non-Shumate dealer close by and I don't want to drive to Seattle or Boise twice to fix this, the gas would cost more than the parts!!

Yeah, both my local dealers were clueless before meeting me. I had to tread a fine line between educating the ignorant, and not alienating them at the same time by pointing out their ignorance, not appearing arrogant or condescending. I don't know why Milwaukee keeps them in the dark about this. The cynic in me thinks it's 'cuz maybe by doing so, the dealers unwittingly $hield the MoCo by getting the uneducated owners to pay for the fix.

I may try Shumate but I'm a little scetchy on that at best.
