I bought my 09 FXDC back in Jan. My 1000 mile check was done by Harley. I went in to the dealer the other day to find out what oil to use in a change and how much to put in. They would not tell me. The only answer I got was "if the oil is low just bring it in to us". I just need to know what oil to use and how much.
Simple question I know but I can't seem to get any info from the dealer. My money tree has run dry and I can't take her to the dealer for every oil change.

Use the Harley Screamin Eagle Synthetic 20-50 in the engine
My 08 FXD takes 2.5 quarts engine oil (the 20/50) and 2 quarts of the Formula Plus (1 qt in the tranny plug and a qt in the primary behind the derby cover). That's with an oil filter change. You'll need a torx bit size 27 for the derby cover (at least I do) and you'll probably want a torque wrench with both ft./lbs and newton meters. I usually re-use the o-ring and derby cover seals unless they're nicked or I'm noticing any leakage.
I'd suggest you pick up a shop manual from either the dealer or ebay particularly if you're doing your own maintenance (quite useful for the re-torque measurements on the bolts). Enjoy.
*edit* - noticed someone mentioning the owner's manual. I don't usually check it for measurements as I've got a shop manual, so if you're strapped for cash definitely check it for all the necessary info on oil changes.

I personally see no advantage to using 12.00 syn oil. Dino has worked for years and never been a problem. It is more about changing it regularily then anything else. Just an opinion and I am sure there will be disagreement. I use 20/50 HD in the crankcase, Formula + in the primary and mobil1 75/90 syn gear oil in the tranny. But the manual 60.00 at HD it will pay for itself.
Tomcat has good info except the part about the torque wrench. Most if not all the small fasteners around the engine including primary case, transmission end case and the derby cover are in INCH lbs. not Ft/lbs. An example is "derby cover screws are tightened to 84-108 in. lbs". If you use FT. lbs you'll be up the creek. There are a lot of discussions about what type of oil to use but the viscosity to use is the recommended 20w50.
