I bought a 1997 Super Glide from a dealer in Florida off ebay back in April. The bike has 22000 miles and seems to be in great shape for a 12 yr old bike...my problem is I want to change the oil and fluids but have no clue if dino or synth. was run in the bike. I have no service records with the bike. I do have a detailed list of the work done when the bike was traded in last year and it states the oil, primary and transmisson oils were changed but does not state what was used. When you call the dealer they tend to give you the run around and you come away with no straight answer. Is there a way to tell what oil is in the bike?
Thanks
If you want to use synthetic, just do it... doesn't matter what was in it before.
Yeah...for some reason, I've read several threads on here where people are either stating point-blank you can't mix petroleum based and synthetic oils, and/or if you don't know what's in it, you gotta use dino...
Simply not true... You could have synthetic in your bike, come out one day to find it's low, and put dino oil in it. It'll mix. You can even buy 'em mixed together for you...it's called a 'blend'.
At 22k miles, you're safe to use synthetic in an otherwise healthy motor. There are some problems that it'll exacerbate, however....but it's also a good way to find out if you got 'em.
If the bike has used dino oil for 22k miles it's possible there may be sealing varnishes on some of the gaskets from the dino oil. If you decide to use synthetics, these oils could clean these varnishes off and seepage could occur. Most of today's syn oils can be installed during a regular oil change, no flush required. Due to your location I would give Mobil1 V-Twin 20w50 syn. a try to assist in handling the heat. With an oil filter change start with 2 1/2 qts., sharp looking bike, looks nice and clean.
