Default Starter grinding problem

Can anyone suggest a cause / solution to my occassional starter grinding problem? I have a 2007 dyna. Get an occassional loud grinding when starting. Replaced the battery and keep charged on a trickle charger. Can get it to start only if I give it an extra boost with a battery charger. Wont start w/o it even with the fresh battery. Some threads seem to point to a starter clutch problem ? Of course, the waranty just ended. Thanks !!

Disconnect the battery and check the cables to the starter, make sure the connections are clean and not paint between the lug and frame on the grounds, then clean your battery connections and snug them done real good. Remember connect the battery ground after the positive is connected.

Thanks. I'll check that. I had a bad cable years ago on a RoadKing, but that resulted in no starter turnover at all. This starter is certainly turning, but the solenoid seems to not be throwing far enough.

I had the same problem with my starter on my 08 Fat Bob. It started out intermittent but gradually got more frequent and was harder to start each time. The dealer replaced the starter, and I haven't had any problems since. Here's what the dealer's service notes said: "Tech confirmed grinding out of starter. Pulled primary cover and checked pinion gears, all looked good with no debris in primary fluid or case. Performed current draw test and every time starter began to grind and amps jumped above 300 with the highest reading at 365. Typical values are 160-200. If amp reading is over 250 new starter is required. Tech R and R starter and problem was resolved".

Thanks Evil. A verbatim description of this finding is going to be attached to my bike when it hits the dealer service bay this weekend ! Very helpful. I'll update the forum with the results.

Some service department will act on what the customer has already decided on whats wrong. Personnaly I would let them diagnose the problem, then ask the question to see how the problem was diagnosed. Amp draw test would be on my mind when it's time to pick up your bike. The answer from Evil sounds right.
