Yeah I just double checked the Harley-Davidson website and it lists that I need P/N 25416-99C for this derby cover. I just sent an email to the dealership to see how they are going to handle this problem. I live in Panama City, FL and I purchased the cover (and what I thought was the correct gasket) from the HD Dealership in Ft. Walton, FL.

So here is the email I received from the dealership:

Derek,

The gasket we had sold to you was the correct one (P/N 17369-06). If you have any questions regarding this matter, I would be happy to talk with you. I can be reached at 850 862-4706, you can ask for Jason or Doug. Thank you and have a great day!
How is it the HD website specifically lists the P/N and they are saying otherwise? Seriously, do any dealerships know anything about the f'ing bikes they sell?

Some do, many don't. I've gotten to where I trust what I find on the website much more than the local parts dude. I always take the number in and just ask for it. Rather than telling them what I want. Call them idiots and tell `em how it works.

BTW, Be careful removing the derby cover bolts and be sure to use the proper socket. They tend to be overtorqued from the factory. I stripped a couple Craftsman tools on it and four of the five bolts. Had to drill them out.

My problem is that I am not going to drive back over to the dealership and return the product so I can get what they should have given me in the first place. Gas prices are way too high for me to be constantly having to commute back and forth to the dealership because of their error. I don't mind paying the difference for the correct gasket if they would send it to me, and I could send the incorrect one back to them. Unfortunately, they believe that they did sell me the correct gasket even though I provided them with the website to verify it is not. I firmly believe I am now stuck with a gasket that is useless to me and I am going to have to purchase the correct one from a website and pay ungodly shipping charges. No offense to Zanotti's but the part is only like $5, but the shipping charges are $14. It's just a hassle that seriously turns me away from repeat business in the future (another Harley or just for service).

From the Zanotti's website:

Items in shopping cart 1
25416-99C ( Quantity 1 * Price4.9) $ 4.90
Shipping is $ 14.70
Total $ 19.60

Ridiculous huh?

I found the one you need on eBay with only a $2.95 shipping charge:

I HAVE A 2003 FXDX SUPERGLIDE SPORT I BOUGHT THE BLACK WRINKLE FINNED DERBY COVER FOR IT. I USED THE STOCK (FLAT GROVED O-RING) DRIED OUT THE GROVE ON THE PRIMARY COVER AND THE O-RING AND REINSTALLED AND IT WORKED FINE. I DONT KNOW IF IT IS THE SAME FOR YOUR BIKE BUT I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT.

I went ahead and got the gasket off of ebay. I'm learning that the farther you stay away from the dealerships, the better you are when it comes to getting exactly what you need or want. Don't mean to offend anyone by that if I do, but my experiences with two different "local" dealerships have been below par at best when it comes to service or parts.

Fxdxsp2003, I am not USAF. My parents are both retired (20 yrs each) from Tyndall AFB. Being as you were here from 82-90 there is a good chance you know either my mom or dad, or both, depending on what your job was. My dad was a crew chief and my mom dealt with personell (sp?). I joined the Navy straight out of high school but now I am a firefighter for the city of Callaway. Shoot me a PM and we will discuss it, you would be surprised at how much PC has changed since the time you were here.
