Default Disassembling shocks for powdercoating

Hey guys,

Got the front end and various other parts in pieces for powdercoating, however I'm having a tough time getting the shocks out of the coils.

I read in another thread that you compress the shock, which I did, and then remove the c-clip. What is this c-clip? I'm assuming its on the top of the shock, however when I compress the shock it doesnt move let alone give me enough to pull it out.

Let me know what ya think for those who have done this in the past. And I'm aware there are black shocks for sale, however, I dont want to go much lower than I am already at, and cant really afford it.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>GOT THEM APART!

So I built up a rig that allowed me to take the shocks apart. Once I got it built, the shocks were apart lickedy split. All it took was some scrap 4x4 and 6x2 I had lying around, and a 2-1/8th hole bit, bottle jack from my truck, and a bunch of screws (I went a little nutty with them knowing the force that was going to be put on)

Pics speak for themselves!

Oh, and I'm also throwing in a pic of my bike in many pieces, I've never had that much torn down before. Very gratifying. its amazing what a bottle jack on a 4x4x4 block can do for the solidness of the jack, I can put all my 250 pounds on the back and its solid as a rock.

Maybe you need one of these: http://www.jpcycles.com/Search/Produ...esults=10&Nao=

This worked on a pair of Progressive shocks I use to have. It does not work on my Fat Bob shocks, but there are differant type of shock sping tools around.

It's the springs that need compressed.

ohhhh just the springs, that makes more sense. Looks like I'm just going to have to buy the tool. Unless anyone has any other suggestions on how to do this?

Probably not what you want to hear but you could spray paint those shocks a dozen times for the cost of powder coating them and guess what you don't even have to take them apart.I'm just sayin.

Actually thought of that 100 times, and it is a great idea. But the powdercoating isn't going to cost that much because I'm already bringing a bunch of stuff in, and it would seem to be a waste if I didn't throw them in too.

Thought of a few ideas for some rigging to get it out, gunna give em a try tomorrow when the hardware store opens

Oooooo.... DO BE CAREFULE with that "rigging"!

You'll be loading those springs with a great deal of energy when you compress them enough to free the 'C' clip (2 per shock). Think about it... it takes more compressive force on the spring for dis-assembly than the spring ever receives while in service... thats why the shocks don't come apart while you're riding.

If the spring slips out of that "rigging".... there'll be an ouchy, ouchy, ouchy... or worse!
