I've never had a problem with buffeting and I wear a DOT half helmet as well. I have a full face, a nice full face, and I haven't even had it on in 2 years.
I don't really find a lot of benefit from a shield for my face unless the bugs are really flying or it's raining. When it's cold, though, it keeps the chill from blowing right through my body and keeps the pressure off my chest, especially at higher speeds and lets me ride longer and more relaxed. I don't use a shield 99% of the time. But when you need one, they are nice to have, I must admit.
I could get the buffeting down but could never get rid of it with either shield (windvest and HD quick detach). The windvest was much better than the HD but still had some.
It was fine up to around 65 but above that you would start to notice it. With my half helmet it wasnt bad but got worse with my full face which is what I would have on most the time with the shield.
Both shields did help alot on the push on the chest and also with the lift you get with a half helmet.
I have played around alot and I think part of my issue is even though I am short my bar and seat seat up has me back pretty far. It seemed if I moved up closer to the shield I didnt get hardly any buffeting.
I have a drivers backrest so that helps with the push on the chest and now have a heated jacket that with a full face makes it a nice ride.
I hear ya man. I have the standard QD windshield and it does help at times but I realized after paying like $350 for the thing that I'm not much of a windshield guy either. I was thinking maybe a windvest would be a better option in looks and performance but maybe your report has tested that theory for me.
If I could get decent money for it and think of a good way to ship it, I think I'd be willing to part with my windshield.
Big fat ditto - I Just picked up a QD Standard height to compliment my newly converted front-end (01fxd to an 07fxdb) - it plugs and plays great. Seems like mid-way to 3/4 up the tubes is best. But after 55-60mph no fun unless you are hunched over hiding behind it (I'm about 6'1") and sit high in the saddle.
Your going to love the heated jacket liner. It absolutely cuts the chill off your body without any bulk or weight. Your next heated purchase will be gloves...

Ya i tried the gloves on but they were pretty bulky. I was thinking of trying the glove liners and finding something thin but wind proof to wear over them.
Windshields are for pussies. Ride hard or stay home.
I said that very thing until a big ASH yellow jacket got jammed in between my cruiser goggles and half helmet. Since Wasps don't loose their stinger's when they unleach hell, my face took an ol' fashion whoopin' by the time it was safe for me to stop and brush that SOB off my goggles. That experience pretty much took care of my immortality! I still don't like windshields, but It totally changed my mind about full face helmets! I'm currently lookin" for a good one!
Anyway, below is a picture of the rat bast@#!d!... If you see one KILL IT!
