anyone dropped their front more than 2". I have a 2" drop in my front, really want to lower it an inch more. I have the old progressive lowering kit where you have to take apart the lowers to install the lowering springs. Progressive says not to use their drop in kit in conjunction with my kit. Anyone have an idea as to what I might be able to do.
Any lower than 2" and you need to get your fork tubes cut. It's cheap as hell and this is the best guy in the world at doing it: http://www.frankmain.qpg.com/
ok did some research. the 41mm stock wideglide front has fork tubes 24.25". My lowering kit turns this into 22.25". Stock FLST front is 22.25". I am now wondering if I can get the drop in kit for the FLST to work? The spring and compensating spring should be the correct length for my application.
yeah shorter tubes. Gotta get fatboy tubes. The tubes are 2" shorter and then I will use the spring kit for a 1" drop instead of the 2" it is at now. Also need to get the fatboy dampers.
I'm still saying, you are making it more complicated than necessary. We're talking $40 plus shipping to send your tubes out, have them cut and rethreaded, and use all of your original hardware. You can keep your 2" drop if you want, and add another inch or three for whatever total drop you want. A good test, take the springs out of the forks and let the bike drop all the way down. Make sure you have some clearance between your fender and the lower tree. This will tell you how far you can safely drop without worrying about bottoming out.
All I'm saying, give Franks a call, they know their stuff like the back of their hand and have been in the fork business since the early 70's. Tell them what you have and what you want to do, they'll send you in the right direction.
as it turns out, I can use the progressive drop in kit to get the additional 1" of drop I am looking for. Contacted progressive about this. My current lowering kit in effect shortened the tubes 2". Done by decreasing the length of the dampener. In essence I have 2" less travel than a stock wide glide. The drop in kit does not decrease travel. A spring compresses to shorten the height when the bike is dropped to the ground. Travel length is maintained. By installing the kit, I will maintain my travel and when the bike is on the ground my lowered effect will be achieved. with me in effect having 2" over tubes on my bike, there is no problem running the two systems together. Progressive uses the same kit on all the 41mm front ends(fatboy, wideglide, nighttrain etc.). The difference in length in tubes is compensated by spacers.
