Post Big Sucker cover sizes

Hi all,

I was looking into a new aircleaner setup and one of my choises is the AN Big Sucker.
They seem to have several variants. The one I've seen on the forum most is the "regular" big sucker.

It seems AN now has a new one on which you can mount a derby cover (Derby Big sucker).

The difference being that with the "regular" model you have a cover mounthole in the middle and the Derby Big Sucker has 5 mountholes along the side to mount any Derby cover.

My question is: how big is the cover of a regular Big Sucker (the small round ones most people mount or build themselves) compared to a derby cover? I'd like to show as much of the engine as possible (it's for a 2007 Bob).

Just for fun another aircleaner setup which cought my eye. It's from a German company. They make a see-through air cleaner which is kinda cool (but expensive). They're called Davincie Motors and the aircleaner is called Bullseye.

Way over budget for me

Yeh that Davincie is sort of slick. Especially if you could do your own thing with the clear insert.

The regular stage 1 big sucker, which is what I have, is exactly the size to fit the air cleaner inserts that HD sells. That's what I have mounted on mine. I think the derby covers are a bit bigger around so the filter must be bigger. Not 100% on that. Anyway, to give you a reference, measure the circular part in your stock AC cover where an HD insert would mount, and then measure your derby cover, there's your difference in size.

Some people also use what became known here is the "mud mod" where mud was taking stock ac covers and cutting the center portion out to mount on the round air cleaners. Pretty slick looking but I don't think he's doing them anymore.

Now that I look at your pictures, you can see that the derby cover option is bigger on the outside. And it probably has a backing plate that goes into the center hole with holes to attach the derby cover. So it's probably not only going to be bigger and cover more of the motor, it's going to stick out further and get in your way more as well.

the negative to the derby cover air cleaner is if it is a washable filter that uses oil. The original big sucker is a K&N (or is oiled like a K&N) and is a reusable, washable filter. Running the filter open like this results in a dirty filter every 1000-1500 miles or so. Sure would not want to buy a new filter that often. I wonder this because in the photo above the derby air filter does not appear to be oiled.

Default air filter

OK, watch out here. I've just been through this and K&N filters will not fit in a big succer backplate. You have to get the ness filters. Ness filters look like K&N right down to size and that red color but the 3 screw holes you see on top of the ness filter will not line up with the bolts coming from the throttle body...its close but no cigar.....they're all protecting their turf. HTH

Have you actually tried to fit a K&N to the ANBS? I asked K&N and their response was that they had not tried to fit the two, nothing about they would NOT fit...

Is it the K&N HD-0800 that you have on your ANBS?
