Continuing my effort to modernize my 01fxd I just finished (well almost - need to put the slip- ons back on and road test it) putting a Deuce wheel on. It's sporting a nice fresh metz 160/70 880. Now this bike (an 01) came stock with a 130 on a 3" wheel. Thanks to forum member fixxr for paving the way on this mod.
Oh yeah I popped on a set on FXDX shocks that I scored off ebay. This puppy is coming together . Here's a couple of pics of tonites progress.
So if any is wondering if you can put a 4.5 wide 17" wheel on an 01 - answer is abso-freakin-lootly.
yeah, I'm interested in what needed to be done to get that puppy in there.
No mods at all (other then the FXDX shocks). I can't say how it will ride until I take it out this weekend. And I'm not sure if the stock shocks would have made a difference (regarding clearance). The FXDX ones are about an inch taller - so that may help if there are any tight squeeze issues. But it looks like there shouldn't be any issues. I was going to put on those shocks in any event.
Basically I took off the 16" mag and got a deuce wheel off ebay and a new tire from Dennis Kirk. Another plus was the stock spacers, pulley and rotor went right back on. The deuce has a 3/4 bearing set-up (like my 01) so no problem there.
Wednesday when I mounted the tire at my buds indy shop - I thought I'm in trouble - this thing looks like a 180 and will never fit. And it still looked like that when it was sitting in the garage. But it's on and not rubbing - if fact it looks like a 170 might have fit.
The only "trick" is to take out the brake pads from the rear caliper on re-installation of the wheel. Otherwise it's a little to tight to go over the rotor and you may scrape the wheel during installation.
Anyway if we get some dry days this weekend I will give road test.
George
The Deuce wheel looks really nice. Where did you get the Deuce wheel and what did you pay for it?
Got the wheel off of ebay. There are usually are a few listed every week. I'm always a bit nervous with wheels on ebay, but this one came straight and real clean - $130 shipped. I've seen them for more and for less. But the price was in my budget.
Put about 200 miles this weekend on the bike and it's a great upgrade. Between that and the new front end I get a lot of "what year is that?" questions.
You folks with the 06 and newer bikes take all this stuff for granted
Very sharp ride there, George. I like to see peoples rides evolve by they'r own hand rather than just trade them in for this years paint job.....not too radical but definately your own.
