winter riding tips, out this morning in 30 degree weather
as far as protective gear i have a 30 pound heavy leather jacket original from the sixties but someone sowed a quilt inside which quite to the contrary since its made of cotton it makes you sweat at about 45 degrees and makes you colder than the combination i came up with
i layer my clothing with a thermal shirt and thermal hoodie topped of with a polyester blend heavy harley brand windbreaker type jacket with synthetic thinsulate lining
my black leather chaps also have snap in snap out thinsulate lining in them finish off in heavy leather boots and helmet with a beanie cap pulled down around your ears and a black scarf wrapped around your face and some heavy gauntlet style gloves that will go over your jacket cuffs and your good to go
it doesn't get much lower than the mid twenties here and i am confident with this setup i can go the whole winter
any other tips you all got?

yet even when its running i am still pretty much a year round rider anyhow, so thats my lifestyle i chose it or it chose me my life is half over at 45 and i am going to the extreme while i still have the ability to do so
so bring on the cold the fog and the rain , never rode in snow i guess thats where i'd draw the line but its only snowed in the winter where i live about 3 times in the last 30 years or so

It was 21 degrees when I came up through Tukwila, 26 in Seattle and around 20 in Everett when I got in at around 0630.
I got two new things this fall that really make the ride possible:
- Gerbing glove liners
- Firstgear pants, with zip-out insulated liners
I wear heavy wool socks under my boon-dockers with rubber overshoes. Depending on how cold I expect it to be, I'll wear long johns (or not) and jeans under my new firstgear pants. I'll wear a t-shirt, shirt, sweatshirt, leather jacket with quilted vest liner, and a Himalaya rain coat (optional, but it does keep some additional heat in). I wear a skid lid in summer/fall/spring, but a 3/4 helmet with face shield during winter and I have a neoprene face wrap keeps me pretty comfy .... Over the gerbing glove liners I'll just wear leather gloves or maybe insulated nylon gloves if expecting rain.
I was warm and comfortable this morning ... I only saw one other bike this morning ... no Goldwings or BMWs ... the bike was a metric V-twin and I think a dude was just jetting across town up here in Everett ....
I took the cage yesterday, but after seeing the road conditions, I thought I was good to go this morning ... the ride was actually pretty nice this morning ....
Of course, I also have my full bat-wing fairing and fairing lowers installed for the winter ... makes a huge difference not having the additional wind-chill factor ....

I bundle up with several light layers and can hang in the 30's if I wear a full face. I stopped wearing leather because it gets too stiff and cold. I wear armored textile gear, which stays warm and flexible and allows me to layer without bulking up too much. This morning it is in the low 20's and ain't no way I'm riding. There's ice everywhere and I'm in sunny California.
