Question gel in seat

I bought a gel pad that you set on top of the seat a couple of years ago in Sturgis and it really was comfortable on the ride back to San Antonio.

Well my seat (06 stock superglide) doesn't seem as nice as it once was, so my plan is to cut out some of the foam in my seat and place this gel pad in there and then put the stock apolstery over the top.

Has anybody tried anything like this?
Is it a good idea or am I asking for problems?
If you have done this are you happy and do you have any suggestions.

the big negative to gel is that it holds temperature. So on hot days, the seat get and remains very hot, on cold days the same only cold. FWIW I don't like gel myself. There should be no problem with what you are doing, you may end up with a toilet bowl effect while seated though. This is where the gel is softer than foam, so the foam leaves you feeling like your sitting on the toilet.

I didn't think about the gel getting cold or staying hot, thanks.
The size and shape of the pad is about the same as the seat, so I don't think it would create a bowl (which I know I wouldn't like)

Rounder is 100% correct! I had a gel seat for one day. I installed it, went for a ride and parked in the sun for over an hour while having lunch. When I got back on, the seat radiated heat for over a half hour roasting my nuts all the way. It was a hot day to start with and having a heated seat made it worse. When I got home the gel seat came off and was sent back.

Forget gel - seats or pads... false promises and pure horsesheit.

Besides the above mentions, they will squish out wherever the most weight is. Total scam.

A controversial and highly opinionated subject, but read the tech behind Corbin's hard *** closed cell foam. I've used lots of seats, and I would say Corbin is the most comfortable long ride concept going, bar none.

FWIW - Mean City Cycles (one of this sites sponsors) has a deal where they'll put a gel insert into your saddle and even one where they put memory foam over the gel. If I hadn't bought a new mustang seat this fall I'd probably have tried that with my stock seat.

Have a good one,
Dave

I purchased a corbin seat and tryed like hell to like it. Never did like it and finally sold it on ebay. I was glad to see it go. Everybody that I have ever talked to said corbin is the best seat and that it is the best purchase they made for their bike. I just couldn't get used to the contour. It felt like sitting in a bowl and forced me into an uncomfortable position.
The people at corbin said it forced me into the "correct position" and that my riding posture was incorrect if the seat bothered me so much. Here comes the controversial part. I would rather sit on a bath towel than a corbin seat.

foam over the gel I wonder if that would help with the "hot, cold" thing.
Thanks every body for the advice. I am still alittle upset that I lost some money pawning off that Corbin seat. And trust me somebody got a great deal and is probably very happy with it.

I went to a shop that made custom seats. As others have mentioned, they told me never to put the gell in on top of the foam and then install the cover. It will get very hot.

They took my seat apart, removed foam from the bottom side and replaced it with jell. $200. Did not make the seat a whole lot more comfortable.

I also tried one of those "Butt Buffers" that you strap on the top of the seat. $90.

Best to find a good after market seat that fits and feels good.

Had a nice Corbin on my last bike and it was great. On my new FXDC I added the Sundowner 2 up and it feels super.
