Find a good Indy, or do it yourself. I rarely if ever, go to the dealer for anything.

Like a lot of members who have posted, I do most of my maintenance ... the thing that kind of got me at first was the 'hodge-podge' of fasteners ... and a lot of torx ...

I didn't have a single 'torx' bit in my toolbox until I got a Harley ... lol ...

Also, kind of strange that there will be an odd 'metric' fastener thrown in there every once in a while ....

Have to agree that it is really satisfying ... the pride of having done it yourself ... as well as the knowledge that it was done right!

Your 1k service would be a good time to switch to all synthetic lubricates for the motor, trans and primary.
Then do the regular maintenance, as described in the Factory Service Manual, your self and keep a record of said maintenance.
Are you saying we are talking about 2007 getting its 1k service? I must have missed something. And, yes, it is a good idea to let them do the first service. It's common knowledge but it is, of course, optional.

+1 on not critical enough!

I paid for the 1k maint on my bike at the dealer and they overfilled my engine oil by more than a quart . . . .bought a J&S lift this summer, owners manual and a couple of small tools I didn't already have (belt tension gauge) Those monkeys will NEVER touch my bike again.

FWIW.
I had the same exact experience! Good on you for catching the filter! HD lost my service business forever, If I can't handle the repair - it will go to an indy. Most all the advice provided in this thread is right on the money.

The bikes are agonizingly simple to do the service work on. Just do it yourself and keep a record and your receipts for the parts you use. You'll enjoy riding more knowing that the service was done correctly.

If you don' have a good indy get the following:

1. Service manual
2. Tools
3. J&S or Pitbull jack
4. Stay logged onto the forum

Then you can't go wrong!! It seems like dealership's these days are for the easy buck, not quality!!

Good luck and have fun with your new bike!!
For a proper inspection the cover needs to come off. You can't say the filter is good by looking at 1/5 of the filter. It's one bolt and they damn well should have pulled it, it's pure laziness and bad business. At this point they are liable for any engine damage as they inspected it, said it was good and it wasn't. What if he lived where I do, the wind blows and moves a ton of realestate during the early summer months. Good way to dust an engine.

excuse me for being green. when you guys say keep a record of what you do on your bike...are we talking about documenting every mod done? or are we talking when you do the 1, 5, 10, etc. maintenance, recording what fluids, what gaskets were replaced, etc. i bought my bike wrecked from the police auction and did a fair amount of work just to get it on the road. if you all mean documenting everything that goes on the bike, i better get out to the shed and start logging, because i'm WAY behind.

If you have any additions to the ***dyna models metric sizes database*** please let me know and I'll process the info!
