I would first check out what they have availabe on Ebay........Tons of bikes for sale. It will give you an idea of what's available, @ what mileage and @ what price. If you get a Dyna, you're going to get twin cams. Personally, I wouldn't buy a used bike that has a carburettor. My personal preference is for EFI.
I know my Low Rider didn't have Fuel Injection available until 2006 and the 96 ci twin cams didn't make an appearance until the 2007 model year. The 1998 Wide Glide has the 81.64 CI, 2 cylinder, 5 speed air cooled, Vtwin.Torque was 79ft lbs @ 2350rpm and HP was 56. Dry wgt is 597lbs
They made changes to the Wide Glide in 2000 when they put the 88CI / 1450cc VTwin engine in it, but it still had a carb. Torque 78ft lbs @ 2900rpm and HP jumped to 68. Dry wgt went to 661lbs. It wasn't until 2004 when the Wide Glide came with fuel injeciton on their 88CI.
The next big change came in 2007 when they put the 96CI in ESPFI and a 6 speed trans.
Although it doesn't sound like it, that Wide Glide is at least 12 years old. She could have bought in 1997 when Harley's 98 models came out. At 48,000.........that means she rode an average of 4,000 miles a year. How are the Tires? Brakes? How old is the Battery? How about the Belt? Rubber gets old and hard and gaskets may need replacing and it all costs money. Things to think about before getting into a bike of that age.
Lots of Repo's out there......and guys who just cant afford to make the payments on their newer bikes and are looking for someone to just take over payments.
But check things out...... you never know........ Good Luck with your quest. Once you get on a Harley, there is no turning back.
Wow! She wants 6k for it. It's had alot of mods done, carb stage work, lowered, saddlebags, 'Fats 'shield, and a few other things. If I come across a deal like you got in a couple of months, I'll definitely jump on it. I've noticed that I can find much better deals in Florida than the neighboring states of Mississippi. I suppose there are more of them to be had down there. Oh, and the economy sucks...
Thanks Guys!! Keep the suggestions coming!

I've been livin' on ebay, too, watching prices. They vary so much it's hard to guage what's a good price....
Well, after 21 yrs on the street I'm finally about to move from a Jap cruiser to a Dyna in '10. My neighbor has a '98 Wide Glide w/ 48,000 mi. that's been sitting for a year, but she bought it new and I know that it was worked on only at the local HD shop, and I know the folks at the shop well, so it's all good, I think. My question is- where, other than here, will I find the best/most info on Dyna's? I mean from engine to suspension, handling, parts year compatability, etc... If I don't get her WideGlide then I'll most likely end up with a standard Dyna. Are there years where mods were made that are better (or worse)? Due to finances, I doubt I'll get a twin cam...
This forum has already helped alot, but I'm one of these guys that wants to know EVERYthing before I buy something......
Thanks,
Happy New Year!

In 06 there was a lot of upgrades on the Dyna's. First year for; 6 speed, automatic tensioner's for the primary and cam chain, Mid Glide with 49mm forks, stiffer frame, wider rear tire, optional aluminum profile rims, easy pull clutch, all Dyna's get bottom mount headlight, more refined battery cover, no exposed oil lines. Then in 07 they went from a 88ci to the 96ci.

Would anyone happen to know if there is a difference between a Wide Glide fork slider compared to a Street Bob fork slider?
I bought a chrome slider kit for a FXDWG and was hoping it would work on my FXDBI.
The kits the Harley web site are different part numbers, but the sliders look the same side by side. I know the wheel spacer are different, but I cant figure out what else is not the same.
Thanks,
Unkwaldo
The Wide Glide slider mounts the caliper more inboard, the fix would be to remove material from the mounting points, but I wouldn't do that!

Myself I would say if its a nice well maintained bike go for it. I have an EVO in the garage with over 100,000 on it and know of several with over 150,000 aqnd still running strong. There is nothing wrong with an evo and plenty right.
Yeah, nothing wrong with an EVO at all... proven technology. Some may argue superior to the twin cam... but that would be mostly from EVO owners, most of us twin cam guys like the TC just fine. Same goes for the 6 speed gear box.
Thanks for the links, ws6. I hadn't heard of chopperexchange or totalmotorcycle. I really like the upgrades to the '06 models. But, my budget won't allow it. I've been wanting a Dyna for a few yrs now, but just got serious in the last few months. I've had alot of friends who had evo motors and I just want reliability more than extra horses. I do alot of LD riding, but I don't want a tourer. 600-700 miles a day is normal for me. Right now I'm riding a Suzi 800 Marauder(480 lbs) that I've converted to belt drive, which lowered the final drive ratio and made it bearable to ride that far... I like the light weight of the Dyna and have seen a few comments recently about suspension changes in '97. That's the kind of things I was looking for with this post.
Thanks to y'all for your comments. I'll keep reading the posts and searching for that "perfect" deal for another couple of months before I decide....
