Default Tank Badge Positioning on bare tank

Just removed my stock tank badges.

I am about to install plain bar & shield badges (chrome lettering with a black background).

Anyone have a tried and true method to get "factory-like" positioning on the tank so they look like they came stock on the bike??

Help...

use a cheap laser level and masking tape. postition the laser where you want the bottom edge and the side edge of the badge, then tape the straight lines. then hold the badge up where your lines are taped to check your postition. then stick it when you have it were you like it. jackyl

Not really... but if it were me, I'd get some pin stripping tape from the Auto Zone.
Level the bike on a jack or center stand.
Tape a horizontal line and a vertical line to establish a center point on the side of the tank... where ever it looks good to you, measure from a common reference point (from some where on the bike) for each side.
Hold the new badge over the 'cross hairs'... when it looks right, mark & remove the tape that would be under the badge.
Apply the new badges inside the 'cut out' section, and then remove all the remaining pin strip tape.

I think you did a great job when you re-positioned the originals to the trash can!!

I scan the decal or badge at 100% and print it out on sticky back paper and after positioning it then mark with tape where it looks best. Also have the scoot level on the jiffy stand for the correct angle, a table lift works great, a 2x4 under the stand will work also. If the decal is of recent vintage find a bike with it and measure the proportions, nothing looks worse than crooked or half assed work.

Should the tank badge be LEVEL in porportion to the tank, or LEVEL in porportion to the ground?

Level the bike on a jack or a stand. The wheels should be off the ground an equle distance... then apply the badges level.

Default Tank Badges

If they were manufactured as tank badges, they will have a sweet spot where they will fit the best(on the tank). Then just make sure they are level. Try positioning them with the double back tape still covered on the tank side.

Yes they are HD tank badges labled as "LH" and "RH"

They do have a sweet spot to them.

Which side of the tank is considered to be the right side?
