I'm in the process of doing a wideglide conversion on my '98 superglide. I would like to mount the headlight in a lower position, like stock wideglides. My question is: How hard is it to relocate the headlight and is there any issues I should be aware of with the wiring harness for the stock headlight?
easy to do, you just bolt it into the bottom tree. Doesn't the conversion have a tree designed for lower mount headlight? On the wiring, if you get a stock headlight it will plug right in, an aftermarket one may require a cut and splice job.
The tree is set up for a lower mount light. I was concerned about the wiring harness, since I have the speed/tachometer mounted on the handlebar clamp. Also, the stock light has the "eye brow" attached to it. Can I purchase a Harley OEM wideglide light,or do I have to go aftermarket for this year bike? I was told by a local Harley parts guy that the wiring is a nightmare when doing a wideglide conversion on a 98' superglide, splicing and relocating the wiring under the fuel tank!
They are lying to you. As long as your lower trees have a hole to mount the headlight, its quite simple. I switched headlights when I did my conversion on my '96. There was plenty of slack in the harness to mount it to the top or bottom tree. I personally choose the keep the basball cap mount as it was just one more giant piece of chrome on the front end and I like the thing, but there was enough slack. Theres all of 4 wires in the silly headlight. Even if you had to cut and splice every single one, I think if you could install a Wide Glide conversion, you could splice a few wires. Remember, its in the dealers best interest to scare do it your selfers into paying them to do it for you.
Easy to do. Didn't do the WG conversion when I rebuilt my Dyna, but I did use XL custom triple trees which have the bottom tree mount and just bolted up a new headlight to the lower tree. Actually had a little more slack in the wires and stuffed them a little farther under the tank. I had to rewire the headlight since I went with a new light. If you use a stock WG headlight it should plug right in with your existing connectors.
I was thinking about moving mine (03 fxdl)...to the bottom tree ..new bigger longer bucket light, also...
I dont have the hole mount..i have a new chromed front end...does a guy drill this ??..and what about the control light bar...oil, high beam ..etc...
