I've got Fat Bob bars in my garage doing nothing. I'd trade ya in a heart beat and even throw in a pair of mini apes off a Heritage Softail
I'd take that deal just understand that these bars are not new they have a couple of scratches on them and shiping bars can be an expensive pain in the ***, probably not so bad with drag bars though. Also I would need the risers that go with the fat bob bars I'm not looking for straight drag bars I already have a cafe racer.
I have 16" z bar ape hangers. Recently, when trying to unlock my triple trees, I moved the trees a little with my bars and the welds on the throttle side broke at the base of the bars. Now, normally I would be mad, but given that his happened in the parking lot rather than on the road, I am pretty calm about the matter.
Now I see this as an opportunity to replace the bars with something new. Rather than go back to a solid piece 16" ape hanger again, I have been really inspired by the very old WLA and FLH Harleys. I would like to get a set of handle bars that look like those very old school motorcycles. I also like a lot of pull back so I don't have to lean forward.
I know what I want, but can't seem to find them. Can anyone help point me in the right direction of who sells those bars and what kind they are called (i.e. bicycle bars). While I'm at it, I am thinking of removing the trees and lowers to have them powder coated black.
Man yours aren't the first set of Z-bars I've heard of breaking like that. Were they a cheap set? That's pretty scary. Kind of makes me glad I don't have those kind of bars.
Mine cracked when while riding when I hit a pot hole. Fortunately it was the clutch side and there was enough weld holding to allow me to limp home....barely. I blame it on the stupid integrated risers. Traditional riser bushings provide a little give when you pull on the bars. Without the bushings all the force is has to go somewhere and the weekest part of the bars gives out. All the failures I've heard about have been at the same place -lower welds where the torque is greatest, and on St Bob's with integrated risers.
Thanks for the help brothers. Everyone's suggestions helped out tremendously.
I have good news and I have bad news.
First, i went to the dealership and found the bars that have the look and feel that I am looking for. They are the handlebars off the softail deluxe model. That is the good news.
The bad news is, when I add up how much it would cost to switch out the handlebar, I can't justify the cost of the switch. The bars aren't the problem. I found a set on eBay for $20.00 and a set of risers for $15.50. $36.00 plus $16 is not the issue. The issue is having to buy new steel braided throttle cables, clutch cable, brake line, new upper triple for the risers and powder coating (black of course). The cost is easily sky rocketing and I already made those kinds of investments when I put on the 16" ape hangers. I found a set of black powder coated 16" ape hangers at the dealer for $80. So, I think I am going to get them and be done with it.
Too bad, the look would have really made the bike nostalgic. Feel free to weigh in
