Default Progressive Shocks- which one?

I'd like to get a set of black Progressives for my bob. What one's do you recommend? What spring rate? Heavy duty or Standard? I ride only solo and weigh in at 220 lbs. Some say over 220 lbs get heavy duty but others state that they ride too stiff and go with standard springs. Thanks in advance.[sm=feedback.gif]

Check the adjustment on the shock for the stiffness of the shock. If you have it set at the 4th adjustment , I'd got to the heavy. If you have it set below three or lower, I would stay with the standard.

I've got Progressive 412's,heavy duty, on my bike set on the softest setting and believe me they are very stiff.

I weighed about 240 when I bought them and figured that's what I needed after talking to Progtressive and Eastern Performance where I bought them. Now I've lost about 15 pounds and unless I'm riding two up the shocks are too stiff. I'd go with the regular duty unless you're gonna be goin' two up a lot or on a lot of road trips with weighty luggage.

Good Luck

Tom

Forgot to add, mine are eleven inch so they don't have much travel anyway, might be a whole different story with taller shocks but then you wouldn't get the lowering effect which was what I was looking for.

I'm running Progressive 440's (standard springs) in the rear, and Progressive Cruise Control springs up front. The 440's are awesome. I weigh 202, my lady weighs about 135. We did a 565 mile run this past weekend with two saddlebags, a tool bag, and a backrest bag all loaded to the gills. The ride was great and I wouldn't have wanted heavier springs, though I did have to crank them to full pre-load. I had one or two very minor occurances of my rear tire scraping the fender when we hit big, unexpected dips, but they were minor. Installing HD springs would probably have prevented this, but at the expense of what (I think) would be much too stiff a ride when I'm solo, which is most of the time.

Hope this helps,

Chuck

I like the lowered look so I was thinking the 11" or the 11.5" progressives. I think I'm sold on the standard rate spring but now, which model? 412? 418? 440? Which one? I'm leaning towards the 418's or the 440's.

One thing I like about the 440s is the "infinately adjustable" preload. Rather than a step-ramp as most shocks have, the 440s have screw threads so you can adjust them infinately between max and min pre-load. I also that this mechanism results in a substantial change in ride height between max and min pre-load, on the order of an inch or more. Don't know about the other Progressives.

I put 12" Progressive 412's with heavy duty springs on mine. Lowered the seat 3/4". Love these shocks, much improved ride over stock.

When solo and unloaded I set the preload at the lowest setting. it can be a bit of a harsh ride, but only noticable on really bad bumps. The rest of the time it's nice and firm, very predictable.

When loaded with passenger and/or luggage I increase the preload a little bit. Not in the least bit harsh, smooth, very well controlled. Probably the best bang for the buck out there.

Shocks will be my next purchase. I'll definately be getting Progressives. Presuming the stock SG shocks are 13" .... I plan on going with 11" Progressive 412's for 2"s of drop in the rear.

Can anyone confirm the length of stock SG shocks? I'd appreciate it!!

On the bench, stock SuperGlide is 12 5/8 center to center.
