Your friend should probably test the connections going to the hydraulic pressure switch for the rear brake ... could be that there's a bad connection ....
While it is relatively inexpensive to replace the switch, if it is a wiring issue, replacing the switch won't fix it ... and, it is kind of a pain in the **** to replace the switch and bleed the brakes ....
Just another suggestion to try and avoid some aggravation if it's some corrosion on the spade lugs or a wire that's wearing out or something ... some sandpaper, a wire brush and some dielectric grease may solve his problem ....
Before you change the brake switch I would advise to check if the wires comming from the switch do conduct all the way up to the stop lamp by using an ohm meter....
+ 1 on bleeding the brake line when you have to replace the switch kit!!

I have a friend with a '94 Wide Glide, and when depressing the rear brake pedal, the brake light will not light up.
Front brake does light up the tail light.
Does anyone know where the contact points are made with the rear brake so I can take a look?
i had the same problem last year, the running light was on but when i hit the brake nothing. i found out that the bulb is a dual fillment bulb, one of the fillments are broken. all you need to do is just buy a new bulb and you are back in business. my bad just read the rest of the posts, yes its the button or plunger switch dooo hicky jackyl
You're right though jackyl.... we should start with the cheap stuff and work our way up. I've got some spare bulbs at home I'll bring one along when i stop by his place tonight.
SURFER Chop & FXD2003Rider -- thanks for the info and diagram it'll definitely help. I'll be sure to bleed the brakes.
