Never said you couldn't ride long distances on a Dyna (and I have many plans to do just that) but that doesn't make it a touring bike.

You can fill your car trunk with cow **** and drive around the fields trying to bounce it out but that don't make the car a manure spreader!

I have ridden long distances on my T-Sport (that's an old Dyna) and will continue to do so. Had a RK for a day and it just didn't work for me...had a BMW R1200RT for a week in Italy...that would be called sport touring. It's just a matter of what amenities are important to you and what your performance expectations are. "Baggers" can be made to perform resonably well in spite of their massive weight, but for me they're more suited to the freeways.

A sport shield, throw over saddles, and a couple t-bags (one on the seat, one on the fender grill)... and Wha-La. In 05, took a month off with my WG, went west, stopped at Sturgis, yellow stone, salt lake, Grand Teutons, Colorado Rockies, midwest corn, and the Utah Moabs. Once you find a base camp for the night... unload, and go bag-less.

Oh yea... My WG has the very best sound system ever. Plays a great song over and over... Potato-Potato-Potato. Say what you will about a CD player in the fairing... But driving through the Teutons with "Dr. Feel Good" by Motley Crue blasting out of 3x3 speakers may have detracted from the awesome view.
It can be done for sure. A touring rig would be nice though - bigger hard bags, floor boards, electronic cruise control, ABS, stereo (if you can hear it above 70 mph).

I know the Dyna is not a touring bike...you missed my point, I don't need a touring bike for 99% of my riding. I Just don't need a touring bike when I can put soft bags on mine and get the job. I wanted something that I could personalize and not end up with what looks like a matched luggage set on wheels with some chrome tidbits.

I drive a pickup...feel free to fill your car trunk with what ever you like!.....LOL.

i love my DWG it is everything i wanted in a bike and i doubt i will ever sell it. that being said a nice bagger is appealing to me, but not planned till i am older not that i think it is an old mans bike just i travel light and haven't managed a woman yet to worry with her stuff as well.

No matter how good we have it, we're always yearning for that other thing... LOL!
I was tempted by the Sportster trade-in program a year ago. The bike is my only transpo and the Nightser was killing me on the freeway. As much as I love the Road Glide, I couldn't see it as my only bike. Almost went with a Street Bob, but my Fat Bob is the perfect "split-the-difference" solution. Of course, now I'm jonsing for another Sporty...

Ain't that the truth...There is no such thing as the perfect "do it all bike" there is always a trade off, no one bike can excel in all applications.

I did a 4 day 5 state trip of approximately 1700 miles on an 883C Sportster converted to a 1250 (using oil like Oprah uses a fork I might add) and I was very comfortable on the trip, I just hated having to carry oil with me. We had someone in a truck go along on the trip with us so they carried all the baggage. I agree having some extra storage space would have been nice but I could have strapped some bags on the Sporty and done it without the truck if needed.
If I was comfortable on a Sportster I know I could tour just fine on my Street Bob. I have tons of vacation time but I just don't have the money right now to take it on a tour and find out.

I think every Harley is capable of touring, it's just the rider that is the weakest link. Some people desire more comfiness to go on a trip and some don't.

Default Nothing like the Dyna

I'm very much in tune with this thread. Most of my riding is on the weekends (day trips) in the local area with friends. Once (maybe twice) a year I have the luxury of taking a week-long trip somewhere. My Super Glide Custom has served me quite well on these trips. I've also been seduced by the baggers, especially the Road Glide. I own my Dyna outright, and I can't see trading it in -- I like it too much and it's paid for. I also can't see owning two bikes as a practical matter, especially a more expense bike that I know I'd ride less than the Dyna because of the size. Like someone else said, we're always looking for something more. I suppose if I really started getting serious about a touring bike, I might even start looking at BMWs or Hondas. Heresy!
