Mini Apes for FXD
I want to get some mini apes (12" ? )for my FXD Super Glide, sorta like the Street Bob. What kind of options do I have. Can I switch a street bobs bars with mine and still use my original cables and such ?
Steve
I want to do the same thing. I called the dealer and they told me I have to replace all the cables and brake line but the wiring should be long enough. I was quoted 400-600 for parts depending on what cables I went with.
On my 2003 FXD, I changed to mini apes (similar to the stock bars on the 2003 Low Rider I think). Front brake line and clutch cable did need to be replaced with the cables that were the same length as the Low Rider's cables, but throttle and idle cables did not need to be replaced. They just had to be re-routed so that they did not pass throught he tripple trees. The same throttle/idle cables were used on ALL 2003 dynas. Only the routing was different on the models with mini apes. Check your parts manual and see if you could possibly use the same throttle/idle cables when you make the switch to the mini apes. This could save you a few bucks.
These are Flanders mini-apes on an 06 FXD, the same specs as the Street Bob bars. They are chrome and drilled for internal wiring.
+1 on changing cables and lines. Stock Street Bob cables and bars should be less than $250.00 from someone like Latus HD. Find take-offs in the classifieds here or on eBay for a lot less.

easternpc on ebay is a great seller for SG cable sets. I picked up a new set of Burley cables for $25 less then other sellers. Also bought 12" Burley bars and grips from gel.lowered on ebay. Two awesome sellers.

I put 10 inch mini apes on my 2009 FXD in the fall, swap out for the original STUPID stock bars that Harley put on there. I swear to GOD when designing those bikes they were like "hey guys what bars do we have a shitload of that nobody wants??" and that's the bars they put on the FXDs. ugh AWFUL!!
but to answer your question I went with a set of Wild 1 Chubbies 10 inch black mini apes.... best decision I ever made. I had the job done right by an aftermarket Harley specialist in the area, I splashed out some cash on it too, all told about $1100 installed including price of the bars, new cables, and turn signal relocation to the lower triple tree and labor of course. It's a pretty big job, and yes, I inquired, you absolutely do need to lengthen the electrical harness, along with the brake and throttle cables. I wanted all that done by a pro, so I spent the $$. keep in mind though my particular bars are
wired from within so that may or may not be more required length.
any questions PM me I'll answer what I can!!

I did the same switch on mine, '10 FXD I went with the HD mini apes, from the FXDB. I just ordered the factory replacement parts for the street bob, clutch cable, and brake line. Mini apes were 90 bucks new, I was into it another hundred twenty of forty for the factory cables. Did the install myself. If your aren't doing an internal wiring job it should be a piece of cake.
no need to lengthen the wiring harness, but the rise is only 8.5 in on the factory bars anything higher and you will need to lengthen your cables. If you internally wire you may need to lengthen your wiring also.
