Question Stage 1 over having a IED

I'm interested in the IED for my Superglide but was worried about the warranty. I went to the dealer and they told me that a STAGE 1 download on my stock bike is better and I have to add nothing that would interfear with the ECU. I don't need to buy any extras[pipes aircleaners , etc.]and with everything stock it will run better with the STAGE 1 download. Any body out there have this done,or any different thoughts.

If you're not changing the air cleaner or the exhaust, there is no reason to do either one.

IMO, the download should be offered free. All they do is hook your bike to a laptop, download a map, and they are done - no materials are invloved and it takes maybe 5 minutes. It's outrageous that they charge for that. It should just be a free option - "What map would you like with your new bike sir?" Fat chance.

If you are looking for a better running bike, I think do it right the first time: go with a TTS Mastertune. Expensive (~$425), but it is the best and will last through every change you may make to your bike in the future.

Well, my first question is why are you considering the XIEDs? Are you unhappy with the current performance of the bike? If you looking for more ponies then you need to skip the XIEDs and look at a tuner and at least Stage 1 parts (not just the download). You should see an extra 10 hp give or take. More ponies, more mods.
Now if you're happy with the ponies but don't like the excessive heat, surging or odd throttle response then the XIEDs are a good way to go. They richen up the AFR a bit (about 0.5) which tends to reduce the heat generated from running so lean. The heat issue seems to be greater for the TC96 guys. For us TC88 guys, I got it to improve throttle response but more importantly just to richen the mix a bit for the longevity of the engine.

So if you don't ever see yourself going past Stage 1 mods, then XIEDs are a good bang for the buck.

According to the people that have the IEDs the bike runs cooler, and runs a lot better overall.I have to agree that they should do the STAGE 1 for free. The IEDs are $100 and a STAGE 1 download is $140. According to the dealer the Stage 1 does all this and more, I love the bike stock and don't want any changes,The power is fine, and love the sound of the pipes.{ 2010 FXD } I'm just trying to cool it down. And I don't have to worry about warranty problems.

The stage 1 download without pipes or aircleaner change might cool your engine just because it is designed to work when your pipes and air cleaner are more free flowing. Keeping the stock pipes and air cleaner AND a stage 1 download might actually work if the download does richen the mixture. Can anyone confirm this?

I always thought the Stage 1 download was a waste since it is still EPA compliant which means it wont do much?

I don't see how the Stage 1 download will cool the bike down. It doesn't affect the closed loop portion of your map, that's set by the EPA and controlled by the ECU by signals from the oxygen sensors, and that's the area of the map that will be in effect when you may find heat a problem, as in slow traffic, idling, etc. I had the download done on my bike when I changed out the air box and exhaust because otherwise the map would be too lean in areas not controlled by closed loop operation. In other words, the ECU can adjust for more flow in closed loop mode but not in open loop. I've run the IED and XIED and can attest to the effectiveness of these devices in lowering heat. I'm going to the TTS now though as I have plans for some engine modifications coming up.

Stage.1 download is not worth it.... 150 bucks and your bike vibrates a bit more.

The dealer says that with the STAGE1 it allows more gas so its not so lean which makes it run hot.and other problems people have with the 96". [air flow, popping through exhaust , hesitation ] plus mentioned others which I can't remember.

I ran XiEDs for a couple months. They noticeably reduced temps but did nothing for my off idle surge. And after installing slip ons, little for the minor exhaust pop. I was able to tune out everything myself with the TTS kit, as well as reduce temps. To do over again, I would bypass the XiED and put that $100 toward the TTS kit. The bike is stock except for slip-ons.

Theoretically, I guess, since the ECU is assuming the bike is flowing more efficiently so it adds more fuel, the Stage 1 download may richen up at least the stock bike's open loop and transitions. From what I hear it really does nothing for heat, but I don't think I know anyone that downloaded stage 1 without slippons and/or filter.

I would think the stage 1 would be better for hard acceleration and transitions... What about both the Stage 1 and XiEDs?... But for about $200 more than the combo you can get the TTS and set the bike up exactly how YOU want it, resolve any issues, and are prepared for when the mod bug strikes.

The dealer is wrong. The stage 1 download will not add more fuel when you need it most to cool the engine(idling&low speed traffic riding). If you are going to leave the motor stock for reliability the XIEDS will richen the mixture on the low end which will help it run cooler,be prepared to lose a couple miles per gallon though, well worth it in my opinion.
