what kind of maintenence is required to keep them looking like they do now and how often?
I clean my bike up real good about once a week. Part of that is taking some metal polish, putting it on a rag and rubbing the sliders, then wiping it off. Takes about an extra three minutes. They look good all week, so I don't know how long you have to let them go before they start looking dull. Don't mind the extra three minutes because I would clean them anyway, even if they weren't polished.... just to get the bugs off them.
So it's no different than polishing the parts of the engine which are polished? Or do those have a clear over them from the factory?
I usually use Never Dull, anything better out there?

Don't know which parts you are talking about, so I can't say. I use VIP metal polish from the Wax Depot. It is sold mostly to professional detail shops and the military. I know everyone has a favorite polish and thinks it's the best, but I swear to you, this stuff is unreal. It used to be sold under "The Wax Shop" brand, but Turtle wax bought them out and discontinued it. Somehow on the web I got the original company owner's phone number, called him up and he told me how to get it now. If you order some, I promise you will not be disappointed. If you are, I will buy your bottle from you.

Here is a link ... http://waxdepot.safeshopper.com/211/cat211.htm scroll down to the metal polish. You can get 16oz or 1 gallon jugs. 16oz is plenty.. it only takes a tiny drop to polish both sliders. Stuff is unreal... it is really that good.

I used this stuff on my sliders, triple trees and levers. Everyone thinks they are chromed out, but they are just polished.

Jamie brings up a good point. The levers and triple trees are also polished alum and they come to a good shine with a little metal polish and a little rubbing. The polished sliders won't require any more maintenance than the triple trees and they'r easy to keep looking good.

Good Luck

Tom

Thanks for the tip Bobber Rider. I'm going to pull it off and give it a good buffing. I'm thinking I will also do this for the shift rod as well. Will save me some money instead of giving it back to the MoCo for chrome....

This is a great idea. Sure wish I wouldnt have spent all that money on custom chrome sliders. Oh well. Anybody know if this will work for the rear brake rod? My bike came with an ugly stainless one and it stands out like a sore thumb with all the other parts around it being chrome. Can't seem to find a chrome one through the MoCo so I guess I have to make my own.....

actually, with the stainless rod the story is simpler, dissasemble it and buff it on a buffing wheel.
the stainless doesnot need to be regularly polished like the aluminium.
oxidation of stainless is very very slow and 2-3 times per year will be enough to keep it really shiny.

besides, polished stainless has that deep shine that chrome will never have.

good luck

On mine the rocker, cam, primary, trans. covers and top of oil bag are all polished, not raw/painted. I have to clean them about every other washing.
I'll have to give that metal polish a try.

You can use it on anything, but chrome really shouldn't need a polish. I mean, you could use it on chrome, but I think you'd be wasting it. A good chrome cleaner will be cheaper and do just as good of a job. I use the VIP stuff on my sliders, triple trees, levers and any unfinished polished metal I can find. I also used it on a copper antique that belongs to my OL and it shines like a new penny. I use a different product on chrome though.
