This is pretty ironic because I'm getting ready to do the exact same thing. Bought my Nighty in July and will be upgrading to the WG in the next week or two. I absolutely love the styling and handling of the Nighty, but like you, didn't think it was comfortable on long runs, i.e. no storage, stop every 100 miles for gas when my partners stop every 150+, etc.
I think what has drawn me to the WG is the styling. The back half of the bike is very similar to the Nightster, chopped fender, integrated turns/brakes, and sexy lines.
You sound just like me... Stop over analyzing... DO IT!
I bought an ’08 Nightster after a 20 year riding hiatus and it was plenty of bike for me for the 10 months and 10,000 miles that I owned it, but the Ride Free trade in program was too tempting to pass up. Love my ’09 Street Bob. It’s two different worlds! Much nicer on the highway – holds the road better, doesn’t bottom out, 96” pulls strong and is amazingly quiet comparatively – sometimes I can’t tell if I’m in 4th or 5th at highway speed…..and that sixth gear is plush for cruising.
Went from a 2007 Sportster Custom to a Dyna Super Glide, no regrets what so ever. Much more comfortable ride especially on longer rides. Make the change you will love it.
I don't 'hang out' in the Sportster forum, but do you find Dyna-to-Sportster threads ...?
Occasionally, you'll see someone on here musing about whether to go to a Street Glide or Road Glide ....
Also, on occasion, you'll see a former bagger rider who 'comes back' to riding a Dyna for the sportier feel ...
Its not that uncommon to find a handful or guys who own a bagger and a Dyna ....
* * *
I'm guessing by now you've seen all the encouragement and 'success stories' you need to have pushed you over the tipping point ... good luck on negotiating a good deal ... and welcome to the Dyna world ....
I bought an 883L last year in April before I moved to Panama City. Went to the Tallahassee dealer to look at a leather jacket. Walked out with a good price on a Wide Glide.
The only thing I regret is going thru the Harley taxes all over again and the money spent to convert the 883 to the 1200 is lost aswell as other misc mods I did.
