Thunderheaders Or Rb Racing LSR 2-1 pipes! Dont wast your time with slip on exhaust. When you save up more money go with the SE heavy breather because it not only looks great but it performs great as well. My bikes HP and Tq really jumped from the Thunderheaders, SE Breather, and the power commander EFI. I was in the same boat as you with the cash flo after I got the bike but I waited and it was worth it!
As you see from responses, this topic is hotly debated, with lots of opinions whenever it comes up (which is about weekly). After reading many posts on this forum and also wanting to keep costs low, I recently decided to go with H-D's Stage 1 A/C, SE slip-ons, and download, as a starting point. I purchased the parts from an Internet dealer for 20% off list price. I had my local dealer install the parts, since I wanted him to install the download. I could have installed the parts myself, if I had wanted to take the time to do so -- saving some money.)
I believe these parts are high-quality. For example, the Stage 1 A/C back plate is a machined aluminum casting, replacing the stock A/C plastic back plate. The slip-ons are heavy and are engineered for the tuned weight exhaust system of the Dynas. The slip-ons are not loud, but they do have more bass than the stock mufflers. I like the sound; it carries. I don't want really loud pipes because I'm 55, I have constant ringing in my ears, and I'm trying to conserve my hearing. The download is made for this configuration, and I've found my FXDC runs well with the download. For example, the bike vibrates noticeably less with this configuration, both idling and in motion. I also believe people when they say that the download was a waste of time and money for non-H-D configurations.
Concerning performance, American Rider magazine, August 2009, reviewed the H-D configuration and reported a 10% increase in HP and torque at 4,500 rpm, and a 7% increase at 3,000 rpm on the dyno. I can only say that the bike has noticeably more pep than in the stock configuration. I want to see the difference in gas mileage and engine temperature (if any), but it's raining this weekend, so no Harley time. I might post a video and give some more results later.
Net / net, I wouldn't completely discount H-D's parts and the download, especially if you want to keep the cost down. You can ride it for a while and change it later, if you don't like it.
Well said. I found older SE slip ons ( Cycle Shack Turn Out with SE script ) and went to HD to get an intake and download. Only had the SE ( K & N ) heavy breather which was more than the SE stage 1 intake but as a concession he gave me 20% off so I went with that and the download. Extremely happy and under warranty for 2 years since HD installed it on my 1 week old FXDC. Peace of mind is worth a lot.
I installed the Screamin" Eagle Pro tuner download , K&N air Filter , Screamin" Eagle Black Manifold , and a Thunderheader , they all work nicely together !
V&H Straight shot slip-ons, stage.1 air cleaner, XIEDs.....because the MoCo stage.1 download is not worth the 150 bucks they will charge you. The pipes, air cleaner and XIEDs you can install yourself with little problems.
Clear this up for me; if you have a SERT you don't need the XiED's or is that vice versa??
figure out what it is that YOU want, wait until you can afford it then buy it, if you buy exactly what you want there will be no regrets and you only have to buy it once
i am the furthest thing from a mechanic but i do hate spendin money what i did was i found what i thought i liked the best and what look worked for me. after i knew what i wanted i spent hours and hours finding better prices shops ,internet used, new what ever worked .found sert for 225 on ebay (becareful if you go that route cause it can only be hooked up to one bike) stage one a/c for 109 and v/h short shots for under 200. than beat my local tuner over the head till i got the price i wanted for tune and install 350 total for a grand total of about 900 bucks. so my point to this is dont settle. buy what you like and put some effort into shopping around to get a good price.
