For those with Thunderheader...........
I am the new owner of an '06 bob and have an itch for a new exhaust. I have basically narrowed it to a black thunderheader. What I am confused with is the open loop, closed loop, ..........its all confusing right now. I want to buy the powercommander with the thunderheader, SE a/c map on it and tune it myself. My question is this, is this pipe a good choice for the TC88 motor? What does the O2 sensor eliminator built into the powercommander exactly do? How hard is this install for someone with average to above average mechanic skills? Thanks a lot
I am not your best choice for advice here... I got python pipes, SE A/C and the PCIIIusb on my new 06 bob w/ less then 500 miles on it. But the eliminators do just that... eliminate your closed loop O2 sensors. Closed loop, narrow band O2's allow the ECM to adjust for mixture at idle from I understand. You lose that when you goto the PCIII on the 06 Dyna (up to this point). PCIII has little resistor plug-ins and you plug them in so the reading to the ECM is always ideal. I assume it prevents a check engine light. Is it easy to install... its exhaust and an air cleaner... if the thunderheaders have bungs for your O2's I have seen them cause problems... if not... well so be it. The PCIII is not hard, especially if they allready have the canned map for your combo. Just follow directions and you should be fine. I have no idea about the Thunderhead pipes... but hey go for it and have fun (especially if its not your main means of transportation). After my install I get a little decel popping if I just let right off the throttle coming to a stop vice easing off. I need to add some fuel at 0% throttle in the RPM ranges to take care of that. Otherwise it has been great. I just filled up and did a mileage check this afternoon. 44.5 mpg. and it aint broke in yet. So good luck.
Appreciate it. I knew someone in here would give me a little boost. Maybe the others think I'm beating a dead horse, who knows? Like they tell you in elementary school......the only dumb question is the one that you don't ask right? Anyway, I ordered the thunderheader in ceramic black and I am excited to get it on the bike. Thanks
sweet. slap that baby on along with the SE stage1.
Get the PCIII 811-511 and then download the M811-002 map. You'll be ready to roll.
I have ZERO probs. Your setup should be exactly like mine. The PCIII was cake to install and the map loaded with a few clicks of the mouse.

So this powercommander you speak of. It will come with the "thunderheader map" or I will buy the pcIII and download the map from the website? Did you dyno tune yours or did you slap the pc on and call it good? Any popping on decel? Any sound clips you could let me get a taste of? How hard is the install of the pipe itself? I assume it works with fwd controls. Form follows function for this cowboy. thanks again
The map is available at the website if it isn't allready on the CD that comes with the PCIII. Here is the map from powercommander.com that is for the thunderheader.

Order the Thunderheader now.And be prepared to wait three weeks for it.Also I would go ahead and get the one with the bungs for the o2 sensors you don't need them for the Power Comander but you may want to go with something else in the future and it may not work without them.

I just spoke with a guy at direct parts where I ordered the thunderheader and he tells me that the PCIII is somewhat a step backwards. He says that as far as the closed loop fuel injection goes, eliminating the O2 sensor throws the bike into an "open loop" and this in itself is dated technology. He did recommend the Terminal Velocity engine management because it will maintain the "closed loop" system, but it does not provide timing as the PCIII does. Can anyone elaborate on this, and which setup would you recommend/ prefer? Also, do you reuse the stock flanges or buy new ones with the thunderheader? Thanks
Well first of all I'm EXTREAMLY PISSED at Thunderheader right now. After around thee weeks of waiting my Thunderheader finally came in...IN CHROME!!! If I wanted chrome I would have just got some cheap *** slip-ons or another system for less money and been done with it.As far as the PCIII/SERT/download/Race fueler /whatever I've had three local independant tuners tell me they've taken off PCIIIs to replace them with DFOs,Digital Fuel Optimizers, the difference being that the DFO only effects mixture while the PCIIIs override alot of other stuff you may not need or want to change. Also the local Harley shop mechanic is telling the same story only replacing them with SERTs.I plan on having a local shop throw the whole thing together with the Thunderheader,DFO and open SE air cleaner when or should I say if my damn Thunderheader ever shows up.
Sorry to hear. If that happens to me, god forbid, I will have to make a trip up there. I too ordered mine in ceramic black and it better show up in ceramic black. Thanks for the info. I may have to buy the DFO in that case. Appreciate it, let me know how it turns out. Did you buy it direct from thunderheader? I bought mine from direct parts, so maybe the middleman will catch any mistakes in the orders before it gets to me. Thanks
