When I bought my FXDF I had the detachable windshield installed before I picked the bike up ... never rode it without. A couple of months ago I took the windshield off, and like it much better without. Problem is, when I get up to 60, my half helmet feels like it's going to lift off my head. No problem with the full, but prefer riding with the half. Any suggestions??? (I know, tighten the chin strap).
You didn't mention what type of helmet it was, but in addition to tightening the strap , you could try to do some custom fitting (adding tape etc) if it doesn't fit your noggin real snug. Try pushing in on the sides of the helmet when you are wearing it and see if the fit feels better. Obviously we all have differently shaped heads, and the helmet manufacturers can't possibly meet everyone's fitting needs.
I have an ACC helmet that didn't fit real well when I first started wearing it, but the padding starting forming itself to my head after a while. I've heard that ACC will actually "bend" your helmet to give you a better fit if you send it back to them...just my 2˘ worth.
The helmet lift with half helmets is the only thing I dont like about no windshield and is the main reason I will wear my full on long trips.
I have tried several helmets and finding one that fits good helps. I also find that tilting it forward some before strapping it down helps as well and like you already said you got to tighten it up if going to be running 60+
